Frankly, this is just natural selection.

I know I sound like an asshole...but she was ARMED and trying to hurt people...just because she didn't have the mobility of a person with two working legs...doesn't mean that they can just say "ok, lets let the crazy woman with the knives be, since she is in a wheelchair." If she could run, they would have shot her, and been right to do so.

They used less-lethal force against her and she died...I'm sorry for the family's loss...but if you are too fucking crazy to know you need to put the knives down when ordered by police...you need to be committed.

I don't feel the officers did anything wrong in this case, but I'm sure someone will flame me and suggest that one of the officers should have risked being mortally wounded just to disarm the poor cripple.

Sorry, but you're just a fucking moron. Who would seriously be scared of an old woman in a wheelchair. I don't give a damn if she has knives, if a grown man is scared of that, he's a puss and definitely shouldn't be a cop.

You are a bunch of whippersnappers. 56 is old? My mom is a few years older than that and I would not want to mess with her.

Nope. But 56 doesn't make you old in a wheelchair either. It just means you are in a wheelchair.

Knives and hammers can be thrown and swung! Just because she was in a wheelchair doesn't mean she incapable of being somewhat agile with a hand held weapon, if you don't believe me then have someone sit in a chair with a knife in one hand and a hammer in the other, stand behind them and see what kind of range and killing area they have.

As for the tasers causing her death? It was listed as a factor, not a direct cause of death. If the she was paranoid schizo and was having an episode then her strength levels are higher from adrenaline rushes and her heart rate is up as well. Add what ever medications she was on that may contribute to a fast and irregular heart rate then throw in the electricity from the tasers.

You people do realize what happens when electricity enters the body right? Muscles tighten and such? When the voltage hits the system muscles tighten especially small muscle groups, like the hands. If you have something in them you latch onto them even tighter. After the initial stun of the taser people can release what they have in their hands by their own choosing but if they fail to comply then they normally tend to get another dose of it. Since it had been noted that she has some mental issues then chances she was not rational and did not understand to let go of the weapons and the tasing would cease.

Now let's address how the taser itself works. Initially when activated two aerial prongs tethered to the taser are launched and stick in the suspects skin and a timed voltage shock is administered over a predetermined amount of time that is beyond the operator's control, generally it is a min. of 15 seconds. Any voltage charge after that is controlled by the operator who determines the amount of time the current will flow by the trigger of the taser. They quoted 2 mins. of elapsed time but it did not state that was 2 mins. of continuous tasing! 2 mins. of continued use would have resulted in electrical burning of the flesh around the tasing points.

Now for knocking the weapons out of her hand? Hit those small bony areas of the hands and wrist with a baton and it is a guaranteed conclusion of broken bones and yes I know this for a fact, that's why officers are taught and trained (and dept. policies state) to only use that impact weapon on large muscle areas!

Was this murder? NO! Murder is the INTENTIONAL KILLING of another person. Even though this lady died (and yes it is tragic) a taser is designated as a "less than lethal" weapon officers are still permitted to use lethal force if a person is armed with a weapon and the probability of the bodily injury and or death is present.
