Wheeler student suspended for having knife
A Wheeler High School student has been suspended for 10 days and charged with a felony for carrying a weapon onto the campus.
According to an arrest warrant, Wilford Ray Chandler Jr. had a pocket knife with a 2.5-inch blade on Aug. 29, a violation of the school district's weapons policy.
Jay Dillon, a Cobb schools spokesman, said Chandler left the Wheeler campus about midday — a violation of the school's rules. When he came back onto the grounds, a school resource officer searched him and his car, which is standard operating procedure when a student leaves campus without permission.
The blade, described in the warrant as a "multipurpose-type pocket knife," was found in the center console of the car.
"He left campus when he wasn't supposed to, and he acknowledged that," Dillon said.
The district's zero tolerance policy dictates that a blade longer than 2 inches gets an automatic 10-day suspension and criminal charges. Smaller blades get a 5-day suspension and may result in criminal charges, Dillon said. http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/met...nife_0905.html

I would have told them to fuck off the minute they wanted to search me. If the reasoning for the search is school shootings, make them walk through a metal detector, but to be subject to search for leaving school grounds is crazy. The vehicle search is complete bullshit.
I'm not feeling it. Sorry, but a buddist in the family doesn't make you open-minded. It just means you're bangin' a buddist.

IRWINTON, Ga. -- Authorities in Wilkinson County say a seventh-grader armed with two steak knives held six fellow students hostage Thursday morning but was disarmed and arrested 45 minutes later.
Officials say the boy brought the knives into Wilkinson County Middle School at about 7:50 a.m. and trapped six students in a classroom with him. But a female student was able to escape and notified a teacher.
Principal Aaron Geter says teachers cleared the hallways of students while he negotiated with the boy, who was using his body to block the door.
The principal said Irwinton and Wilkinson County law officers arrived within minutes. The officers, prinicpal and teachers tried to persuade the boy to surrender.
Wilkinson County Sheriff Richard Chatman said officers and Geter were able to trap the boy between the door and the wall and disarm him.
The boy's name was not released by authorities because he is a minor. His family previously lived in Savannah and Oklahoma City, and had only been in Wilkinson County for a couple of weeks.
Chief deputy Heath Bache said the boy will be charged with carrying a weapon on school grounds, false imprisonment and terroristic threats and acts.
That's pretty darn crazy. What do they do about scalpels in science class or just about any tool in mechanics? Next they'll take away the pens because they can be used as weapons. Where I grew up we didn't have security guards or checkpoints or searches. What the heck is this world coming to?
Having a knife in your car is very different from threatening someone with it. This is bullshit.
Heard a story last weekend from a teacher in rural area that they'd had a big problem with the state. The state decided to test schools for "risk factors" of violence by giving kids an anonymous test to fill out. One question regarded bringing weapons to school, specifically including pocketknives. Another regarded alcohol consumption, of any amount. The two biggest groups of kids there are (a) farm kids who have to cut the hay bales open with their pocketknives to feed the animals on their way to school, and (b) Latino farmworker kids who are Catholic and have a sip of wine every Sunday. The stats looked really bad. The school has less than 100 kids in it, and has never had a serious violent incident.

When I was in HS, a friend of mine got caught with a shotgun in his car(we had gone hunting the day before and he left it behind his seat). He got sent home to remove it.

Yeah, Farmington got a resource officer the year after I graduated.
It's all bullshit. Haven't people figured out that the more you try to control people, the more they rebel, and then it turns into a vicious cycle. In my opinion, the people who try to control others are just as responsible as the ones doing the rebelling.
Not to sound like a nut, but it's also obvious that they are policing the schools more to make kids used to being policed so much and make it the norm. That way it's easier to pass more "security" laws as they get older because they're used to it and will allow it. At least that's what they think. What will really happen is that it's all going to get to a boiling point and cause the majority of people to retaliate.

When *I* was in HS, many of us had rifles and shotguns stored in the vehicles on an ongoing basis. We weren't sent home.
