The reasons the death penalty doesn't deter as many as it should are in the dozens, but the most important reason is because it takes a least 20 years in appeals to get the get/girl to serve their sentence...by death.

Instead, they get to sit around, watch TV, do dope, all at taxpayer's expense.

The cost of housing one inmate, for one year could send 2-3 kids to good colleges.

If the death penalty were carried out, within 24-48 hours of the trial, and was televised, it would be more of a deterrent.

Also...prison overcrowding?

Why is that an issue?

Make them stand up 12 hours a day, and sleep on top of each other or in the corners at night.

Problem solved.

Jail/Prison is supposed to be an unpleasant place...

The death penalty is far to lenient for criminals.

What we should have is collective responsibility whereby if a person is condemned to death his immediate relatives/loved ones would also be put to death. This way we can get rid of bad genes--criminals often blame their parents for their upbringing so by enforcing collective responsibility we can get rid of families who don't properly raise their children.

I know it's getting off of the subject, but why don't more places have prisons thats like http://www.cnn.com/US/9907/27/tough.sheriff/ , I mean whats the point of building these huge buildings with AC and all this other shit, put them in the middle of no where with tents, take them out in groups and make them work. What a waste making so many people sit in cages, breathing oxygen and eating food, without ever expending any useful energy. One person says ""We still have rights, but they act like we're scum," one inmate complains.", and no, you don't have rights, you gave up those rights freely when you chose to commit a crime. I bet fighting isn't near as bad either.

It depends on your interpretation or goal of the interment. Is it punishment? Is it rehabilitation?

Both.

You make the guy miserable...and pretty soon his brain figures out...

"Hmm...I guess robbing kind of sucks...maybe I'll get a job when I get out".

Both punishment and rehabilitation figure into it, in varying degrees depending on the crime and on the attitude of the local system. But I think the more pertinent purpose is simply to protect the rest of us by getting the criminal off the street for a while so he isn't committing more crimes. Which is why repeated offenses for the same crimes do (and should) carry longer sentences each time.
