Extra points on civil service exams based on race is BS
This is a topic that I have always though about. The racial quota that police departments, fire departments, etc have to make is bullshit. I'm sorry, but it is. Why is it that a hispanic or an african american can get extra points on their exam just based on their race? I don't give a shit if the police force in my city was filled with Puerto Ricans, if they were best suited for the job then i say they are the ones that get the job. This bullshit about needing so many woman or so many asians or so many whatever the fuck they need is garbage. You have people taking advantage of this. Police officers who don't give a shit about their jobs, getting hired just because they know they will get great beenfits and a pension. Yet a guy like me has to bust my ass tiwce as hard to get on.
So basically what the government is saying is whites are just smarter than your average (inser race here) so to make up for the difference we will give (race) extra points to help out. But oh yea, if i say that i'm the racist right? If i think it's unfair than i must be a racist right? What fucking bullshit.
The only people i can see getting extra points are people who server in the military. I have no problems with that. But this extra points because of race has got to go.
Just curious to see what everyone else thinks about this.

Businesses, Police and Fire departments all suffer due to affirmative action because it prevents filling all the positions with the most qualified people. Personnally if I were a minority I would not want that stigma around me. Even if I was the most qualified, some people would always think I was the "token".

The OP didn't say he was against any non-white person getting the job. He was only against preferential treatment due to a minority status. Accusing him of being racist is inflamitory and uncalled for.

I have before, I will do it again. When I was in college, I knew a few department managers and Alabama Power. One of them told me once that when they hired people, they were required to make race a consideration. If a (black, white, purple, etc..) guy and a white guy were both up for a position, the white guy had to be FAR superior to the other. If it was even a remotely close contest, with the white still being on top, the other got that job. This kept the crooked NAACP off their back.

I got empirical evidence for ya, jim. I know this will get me labeled a bigot, but here goes:
According to the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, out of the 16.5 million undergrads in 1999-2000, more than a third were earning grades of C or lower. And of all African American students, 48.9 percent fell into this category—a larger percentage than in any other group.
I like Mike Adams' (a conservative professor) approach - if every college student selected a minority for their race when applying, it'd screw up the entire process.

The goverment didn't say whites are smarter, you did. I suspect they give extra points out on the basis of affirmative action.
But yeah, it's bullshit.
I know the government didn't state that and i didnt exactally say we were smarter, i'm just trying to figure out why they do it. If you are giving different races extra points just based on race and you make whites score higher just to be considered equal than it's basically saying..."Yea we think you're not as smart so here are some extra points to help you out". It's the only explanation i see because "affirmative action" is BS. I would like an explanation as to why they can get extra bonuses based on race and why whites have to do better.
How about choosing the best people for the job? I should probably keep my crazy ideas to myself though .

Thank you, because i'm not at all racist. I have good friends who are Korean, Puerto Rican, and Phillipino and my wife is Portuguesse (my dad is half portuguesse, but I look very white thanks to the French and Irish in me ). I said in my post i don't care if the entire police force is filled with a certain race, if they were the best suited for the job than that's who i think should be chosen...not just someone because of race or sex.
I am taking the police exam this weekend. I am studying and all i can do is my best. My best friends father is a cop, we have 2 cops who are close friends to the family and the owner of the pool hall i shoot out of is a cop. Doesn't really matter who you know for the exam though because I still need to do very well to even get looked at. One gave me a nice study guide and said just give it your best so that's what i am going to do. It's the only reason why i made this post, it's not something i thought of till i signed up for the exam. I'll see what happens.

Sure you did, you wrote it. And I don't think you have an inkling of an idea as to what affirmitive action is.
Well why don't you fill me in then seeing as your such a smart ass? Affirmative action, quotas, whatever the hell it's called, no one should get extra points or help based on race or sex.
Again, i didn't say whites are smarter than other races. To help you out i'm saying right now that i know they are not, one singal race isn't smarter than another, it is different from person to person and that is why i feel you should hire based on the individual. You disagree?
