Default Would you get upset if a muslim mosque was built in your area?

Keeping an open mind there are two very valid points to this debate.
1.The US is a free country and people should be allowed to practice whatever they like as long as they do it in a peaceful manner and dont cause problems for others.
2.The reality is muslims have caused a lot of pain and suffering throughout the US and you honestly cant blame everyone for being upset if a mosque was being built in their area.
How do you folks feel about this? Are the blacks justified in saying that they dont want a muslim mosque in their community???

Some folks need to just get a life.

Who really freakin cares. If you don't like the church there, then don't fucking go to it. Pretty simple if you ask me.

Point one is recognizing a constitutional right. A right that countless men and women have bled to protect, one that makes us different (better) than other countries.

Point two is an irrational emotional response held by the ignorant and intollerant.

Do you *really* think that both points of view are "valid"? I think one is the fruit of idiocy and is not only immoral but un-american.

I'm going to go with point #1, which is the valid one.

Point #2 is simply another prejudice. A small number of Muslims created great pain; millions of other ones in this country did no such thing.

There are far too many busybodies running around thinking they have the right to tell other people what and what not to do. If they have the land and the money, they've got every right to build themselves a mosque.

I also disagree with your signature line. I do agree that riding without a helmet is stupid. I wore one every time before the law in my state, and will continue to do so when I move to a state where it isn't required by law. But the law is wrong. Freedom means being able to make your own choices, even if they're not the smartest choices. The government does not have the responsibility, nor the duty, nor even the right, to protect people from their own choices. More busybodies.

It depends on who the leaders of the proposed mosque would be.

I would obviously be very upset if it were anti-American, theocratic dominance-minded leaders.

Otherwise, it's no different than a church going up in my neighborhood. I don't particularly like being stopped by a cop to let a bunch of sheep out when I'm on my morning cruise.

They have every right to build a church there, I have no beef with that. They have every right to build a mosque there. I do have beef with usurping the power of government to alter the normal course of traffic because you chose to build your church (or business - daycares are NOTORIOUS for doing this) on a busy street.

What also upsets me about this is that liberals have no problem ranting and raving about Wal-Mart being built, but get their panties in a wad when someone doesn't want a mosque being built.

I know this probably won't be popular with most of you, but given all the problems they are having in Europe with large muslim populations, I would not let them build any mosques at all in the U.S, and I would not allow any immigration from muslim countries. There, I said it.

Nope, prejudice and bigotry isn't going to be popular with most of us (at least I hope not).

BTW, the problems in Europe stem largely from the fact that most of those countries have large expensive socialist safety net systems, which they do not allow the Muslim populations to equally participate in, so they get shut out of much of the economic activity and opportunity and wind up in ghettos, poor and angry. Those countries need to be treating people evenly and fairly, and if that means that they can't afford such lavish socialism (for those who currently are allowed entry to it), then so be it.

There is one a few miles from my house. Doesn't bother me. In fact, I enjoy the cute sayings they put on their sign a lot more than the sayings on the christian churches around here.

We went through this in my community.

I was against it, but not for a religious reason. The traffic issues it causes during the prayer hours are insane.

I just wanted them to build it not near an already dangerous and busy intersection.

If they put up a church there I would have had the same objections.

Not to mention the mosque-goers are at risk as well.
