Default 6 Islamists pulled from flight...

Check out this link:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,230939,00.html

Call me whatever you want. But there aint no way in Hell I'd board a flight with them after that happened....
MINNEAPOLIS — A leading Islamic advocacy group called for an investigation after six imams were removed from a US Airways flight and detained, due to what the group suspected was persistent "fear and prejudice" against Muslims.

The imams were among the passengers who boarded Phoenix-bound Flight 300 in Minneapolis, and had been attending a conference of the North American Imams Federation. They were removed Monday evening after three of them recited their evening prayers in the airport terminal before boarding the plane, a leader of the group said.

"We call on relevant authorities to investigate whether proper procedures were followed by security personnel and members of the US Airways flight crew," said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Washington-based Council on American Islamic Relations.

"We are concerned that crew members, passengers and security personnel may have succumbed to fear and prejudice based on stereotyping of Muslims and Islam," he said.

A passenger initially raised concerns about the group through a note passed to a flight attendant, according to Andrea Rader, a spokeswoman for US Airways. She said police were called after the captain and airport security workers asked the men to leave the plane and the men refused.

(Story continues below)

"They took us off the plane, humiliated us in a very disrespectful way," said Omar Shahin, one of the six clerics. Shahin and four of the others are from the Phoenix-Tempe area while the sixth is from Bakersfield, California.

Shahin attributed any concerns by passengers or crew to ignorance about Islam.

"I never felt bad in my life like that," he said. "I never. Six imams. Six leaders in this country. Six scholars in handcuffs. It's terrible."

CAIR planned a news conference Tuesday in Phoenix in which it said it would call on authorities to investigate the incident.

The clerics told CAIR they suspected the "suspicious activity" cited by authorities was the performance of normal evening prayers, according to a statement by the advocacy group.

The clerics also denied that they refused to leave the plane or that they chanted "Allah," the Arabic word for God, as they were escorted from the flight, said CAIR.

Public prayer is not a threat to safety or security and should not be viewed as suspicious or criminal activity, said the statement by CAIR.

Ibrahim Hooper, CAIR's spokesman, said the conference which the clerics attended drew about 150 imams from all over the country, and that those attending included Democratic U.S. Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, who just became the first Muslim elected to Congress.

Shahin said they went as far as notifying police and the FBI about their meeting in advance. He also expressed frustration that, despite efforts by him and other Muslim leaders since even before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, that so many American know so little about Islam.

"If up to now they don't know about prayers, this is a real problem," he said.

Shahin said Tuesday that the group spent Monday night in the Minneapolis area at the home of a local imam. Hooper said US Airways refused to put the men on another flight.

Hogan said more information would likely be released Tuesday.

The other passengers on the flight, which was carrying 141 passengers and five crew members, were re-screened for boarding, Rader said. The plane took off about three hours after the men were removed from the flight.

This is my problem: I am in America. So why the fuck should I learn anything about Muslims and Islam. According to that guy we should all know what they were doing. If I was in the middle east I would respect their customs as I expect them to respect ours. They did notify the FBI though so that helps IMO. But, why are they so suprised that we know very little about their religious practices? The last time some Islamic people were praying at the Airport we lost a hell of alot!!!!!!!!!!

"Shahin attributed any concerns by passengers or crew to ignorance about Islam."

So they expect us to learn their religion? I could give a rats ass about Islam. I wonder how it really went down? If they were chanting Allah in the plane and refusing to leave, then I would definatly want them off the plane. If they had a little prayer before boarding, thats a little different. Maybe run them back through security with an anal probe to make sure they weren't concealing anything. American is the melting pot. They do have the right to practice any religion they want as long as its peaceful(open can of worms here).

not to fucking mention that they are imams and they should be the ones fucking educating the public and denouncing any extremist muslim activities.

Id have lots more sympathy to them if they started taking care of a problem that belongs to them.

Other than that........Id let them on the plane.........just watch them and be ready to do something

I think it's kinda funny. I told a buddy of mine to picture being at the gate and seeing these people come up in all their garb. And then break out the throw rugs... I asked him, what would you do? He said he'd ask them if they were going on a magic carpet ride. And I said no seriously what would you do? He said... I think I'd wait untill the next flight...

Umm - because you live in a nation that espouses religious tolerance and Islam is one of the largest religions in the world?

Because over-reacting to people PRAYING in an airport shows a climate of blind paranoia that makes it impossible to assess actual security risks?

Take your pick. I have no idea what your multi-exclamatory last sentence refers to.

Dude you seriously can't expect me to believe that if you're at the gate somewhere getting ready to pack into a airplane. That seeing that wouldn't unsettle you in any way shape or form.

For some reason you always seem to pic out my post. This time I will gladly go with you! My last statement was aimed at 9/11. Look what happened by our over tolerance to other peoples beliefs. We put ourselves in a postion to be vulnerable. How do we know that they were JUST praying? Can you speak Arabic? If not then you do not know what they were saying do you? They are free to practice whatever religion they want to! Just because Islam is the largest religion in the world does not mean that they can do whatever they please, when it comes to a National Security issue. Just as white people, or any other race for that matter, have to pay for what they do to others and the image that goes with it. So do the people that were responsible for coming into this country as peaceful, little praying Islamics that blew shit up in my Country. This is America. We speak English here. You do not go to another Country and expect them to adapt to your language and learn about your religious beliefs do you? When is the last time an Islamic leader had to read the bible...That is what I believe in so they should have to know it as well. Personally, if they do not like it, then they can take their rag headed ass back to where they came from. As I stated previously, I would respect them in their country. They need to respect mine. Call me a redneck, or whatever, I could give a shit less. But when your people come over here and blow shit up, you will be profiled to a certain extent. Sorry, we did not ask them to do that. If they do not want so much harsh crticism, then they need to do something about the people of their race and beleif that came over here and pulled their bullshit!

People praying always unsettles me. That's beside the point. The point is how imbecilic it is to assume that a group of people acting in an overt, almost stereotypical manner, represent a terrorist attempt to jeopardize a plane flight.

If its just a matter that people were offended by their behavior; well, screw them for a bunch of intolerant jerks. What passes for freedom in this country is becoming straighter and narrower by the day, and before you jump on that bandwagon you'd better take an inventory of your own habits and practices that ANYONE might object to - say like riding motorcycles. Because that's becoming the new criteria for "unacceptable" behavior.

Sorry, but I can't remember a motorcyclist blowing up the Twin Towers or performing terroristic acts all over the world that kill thousands. The radicals of Islam are. So, two different topics!

So what would be the acceptable reaction to a group of Irish nuns dressed in habits, praying together before getting on a flight to England? Based on the bizarre criteria espoused here, they should be treated exactly the same way - not only searched and reported, but detained indefinitely and refused flight permission. The Irish terrorists have killed many times the number of people in many times the number of incidents.

The correlation is the lack of tolerance of any behavior that falls outside of a very narrow "norm" in this country. And motorcycling is definitely outside that pale. I realize it's a different topic, was just relating back to the context of this board.
