I couldn't look another person in the eyes who is facing death and turn my back on them...especially if I have the immediate ability to help.
Financially...that's another story, I am not one to fall for a disaster relief scam or one to be taken advantage of so I am a little more cautious in that area.

In your head, if you remove poor, it makes it easier because of the stigma. It's not voting on the question at all.
Vote on the question and just say you would let poor people die in a disaster.
Not so, because removing the term "poor" as I said, then involves everyone who is in that area.
And I already said I voted "yes," it doesn't matter who is there, they could have left, chose not to, now it's time to pay for those decisions. It's the same as me not helping out when whatever that Tsunami was that struck Taiwan a while back. Did I help? Nope. Did I really care? Nope.
Oh, and to give you the answer I'm sure you're looking for: As btbatl said, I'd be more inclined to help a better off, more productive person than a pauper leeching off of our government.

The doublespeak you mention is clarification. Yes, I would "let" poor people sit on their ass and not help themselves, and die if they didn't choose to eat or drink water. I would also "let" poor people in Mississippi clean up and rebuild themselves.
Your question is would you let poor people die - then you clarify in the first post and say would you help them. Which is it? I donated money to the United Way after Katrina hit. That's the extent of my help. Generally, I donate time, not money.

Hence my decision, help no one....i do my good deeds for people i interact with...the lady that can't carry her groceries, shoveling my retired neighbors sidewalk. Mass disasters have groups allocated to help them, their failures are not the general populaces problem, and money squandering keeps my money in my pocket. Just because the system fails does not make it our responsibility to pick up where they left off.

I voted yes. Not because I don't value a human life, but because there's times when you'd have to make the decision to save another or accept fate. I'd run into a burning building to save a child, but I wouldn't swim across a raging river if there's little chance of survival for either of us.

Absofuckinglutely. If there's looting, burglarizing, and rape in my general vicinity, I'd be glad to shoot somebody to save a poor soul.
My help would be provided on a first come, first served for anyone who needed it as long as I was able to help. It goes without saying that the folks to come to me will get helped before the ones I have to go find. When no one's coming to be helped, I'll head out and help the ones who are not able to come to me and look like they need help.

Well, that's essentially one of my points. Not only would they be more likely to be able to help themselves, but if they couldn't, I'd take console in knowing that they are far more likely to be productive and not soak up govt. funds day in, day out.
