Default The Federal Government's Priorities are out of Whack

So much money has been spent on the wars overseas, that the Feds can't afford to pay their employees here at home when the new fiscal year begins in October. Everyone got this e-mail at 4pm on Friday at work. Great.

It's a pdf, so please open the attachment to read. Bottomline, to meet the proposed budget cuts, we (the Social Security Administration) will have to suffer a 10 day furlough nation-wide. Does anyone know if this is happening with any other government agencies?

Nothing new. This has happened before. Most of the time due to the budget not being approved, etc. Anyone in government service should always be aware that this is a possibility.

btw, none of the goverment agency's in the building I work for have gotten this notice. I'll ask on monday though.

All Furloughed employees will be given the option of making up the days fighting in Iraq. You will be paid when you come home.
They are probably just starting the downsizing of the SSA as the funds are run dry. Good luck.

I spoke w/ someone who works in the judicial branch of the federal government yesterday. They have threatened a furlough for them the past two years, but it hasn't happened. This year, he said, they are trying to put themselves under DHS where all the federal budget monies are going so they don't have to live with the threat of furlough every year.

This has happened before with SSA, but not since Reagan was in office. I've been at my job 4 years and there's never been talk of a furlough until now. This is not something they tell you about when you get hired, so how exactly would I have known that this is always a possibility?

Are any of the agencies in the building where you work SSA? Agencies that fall under DHS aren't having this problem. Just those that are the greatest Social Service to the people here at home. I wonder what kind of uproar there would be when people started to not get their checks/deposits?

I don't see offices of the judicial branch being moved to DHS as a good thing.

Do people not notice that the governments priorities are out of order until they are forced to work for free? Are people this oblivious?

Refreshing to have a younger person say that. The biggest problem is that the money HAS been used for something else and there's a very vocal crowd trying to back out of the country's committments to those who have paid into the system.
