Default Bush uses first veto on stem cell research

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/0....77ijlglm.html

Best quote:

"It crosses a moral boundary that our decent society needs to respect, so I vetoed it," Bush said at the White House.

I sure am glad that his moral boundaries allow us to shit all over our national budget and eliminate our personal privacy rights - not to mention that his moral boundaries allow millions of Americans to continue dying when help is near with stem cell research.

God bless George.

I don't see how help is near with stem cell research. Scientists have made hardly any progress with it. At the same time, I do think research should continue. Maybe it will help some day. People who think it's immoral need to check their morality.

What a fucking idiot. The man claims this country is severly behind others in scientific research, then vetoes this. All to appease a minority of religious fucking nutbags. Whatever.

I find it laughable that we still allow abortion but yet we are not allowed to use the fetus for study of things to SAVE lives.

In war we call a fallen soldier a sacrifice to the cause. Low and behold you "sacrafice" a fetus. Thats entirely different. This is nothing more than another step to taking the abortion rights away from women.

The funny thing is that we want people to be organ donors. We want cures to everything yet no one wants to look past the religious fanatics that we allow our country to run by.

Dubya is a fucking retard...........but his kind is the real problem. Religious zealots really need to be rounded up and exterminated.

he describes the embryos as "unique human lives", yet you cannot even see one of these embryos without a microscope. It may have the potential to be life, but it isn't at that stage. Its a group of cells, not a f'in child. I wish there was a way to quantify just how much dubya has set back America regarding our technological leadership, amoungst other things.

i'm seriously hoping that a fucking scientist that doesn't believe in religion would become president. Just for one term.

Religion is a necessary and useful thing to the ignorant masses. But in the grand scheme of things, it's nothing but trouble.

I'm talking organized religion, people- not belief in god. two VERY different things. Show me one religion that has never been responsible for the slaughter of millions of innocent people.... it's fucking stupid...

kenshi - I agree 100%... "help is near" is a little off - but it's another option that our government should be committing resources to.

I realize that if it were a seriously viable option, private funding for the research would be off the charts. However, government encouragement in the research sectors is warranted... imagine if our government fully supported alternative fuel research, or mass introduction of E85 or Hydrogen Fuel Cells.

Many of the fertility clinics fertilize a bunch of eggs, then toss the rest out. Why not use those to continue research? I just find it repugnant that his first veto is for the exact reasons everyone is describing. Why didn't he veto any of the other RIDICULOUS spending bills that were introduced to him?

I'd rather the government spend my money TRYING to find cures, rather than building a goddamn bridge to nowhere in Alaska.

hybrid's trying to get me on the "selling organs is illegal" rant.

This coming from a man who is anti right to choose...but put an express lane in the Texas prisons for guys on death row...

I think the veto was a bad idea...of course the Congress passed the bill knowing he would veto it and they didn't have the votes to over ride...So it looks like they were doing something...even though they weren't

Houdini would be so proud...

Yes, that's very hypocritical. It's interesting how it took him over 5 years to veto a single bill, and when he finally does it, it's stopping research that could potentially save more lives than it takes away.

No, I don't think it's killing fetuses. But he does, and the line needs to be drawn somewhere so idiots like GW don't start equating an egg with me or you.

Right. He's giving cover for right wing Congressmen with liberal-leaning districts. But I think it might backfire.

My god you would think the president banned stem cell research, with all the bitching going on. I seem to remember the president approving it a couple of years ago. This bill was to expand on that, and he vetoed it. So all of you bitches on the "dubya spends too much" bandwagon can eat sh't. Why in the hell does the US have to lead the way in stem cell research? There are plenty of other countries that can do the studies, and pass on the results (it happens all the time).

Is there any case where you wouldn't defend GW? If he was caught in the oval office bending Dick Cheney over his desk, would you find some way to stand behind him? No pun intended.

I've never seen you criticize anything the man's done, regardless of stupidity. And it's pretty fair to say that the man has done some dumb shit in the last 5 years.

So you like the US being mediocre on research? What a ridiculous thing to say.

This is the FIRST thing he's vetoed. Why the fuck would he NOT veto all the other spending bills... that's ALL THIS IS. It's a spending bill on medical research.

Do you still support American pharmeceutical companies? Might as well just let all the other countries develop your drugs for you, since they'll obviously just pass the information on to us.
