Guantanomo bay is an aberration, It is a prison that any civilised society should be thoroughly ashamed of. Would there be a prison like this on the US mainland ... no, because it's illegal to hold people without evidence or a trial for so long.
Why don't the US government provide the evidence against these people and take it through the legal process .... because they have no evidence that's why.
So the US government is holding people in appalling conditions where the prisoners have no access to any legal representation and there is evidence they are being tortured and being denied basic human rights, and you think you live in a democracy.
So is there is a reason for them to be held without trial for over 4 years ?

Aren't the prisoners there POW's. Since the war on terror is still going on they will be held until the war is over.

I've been reading about the detention camp at Guantanamo, a few things seem disturbing to me.
-They have detained enemy combatants as young as 13.
-28 detainees at have gone on hunger strikes. Of those, 23 are being forced fed by inserting tubes down their noses into their stomach.
-An American soldier was told to act as an uncooperative detainee in a cell for removal practice, which by lack of communication he was beaten to the point of brain and spinal damage.
I'm not saying these suspects shouldn't be prosecuted, if they are guilty. However, I'm not too fond of the idea of secret American concentration camps, with evidence of torture.
The U.S. government has classified the detainees in Camp X-Ray as "illegal combatants," rather than prisoners of war (POWs), which they claim means that they do not have to be conferred the rights granted to POWs under the Geneva Conventions. The U.S. government justifies this designation by claiming that they do not have the status of either regular soldiers nor that of guerrillas, and they are not part of a regular army or militia.
