Shit... that is prety screwed up.
Honour killings in Palestine and the West Bank... unbelievable. Making it the womans fault they got raped... often by their father or brother.
Culture and religion are nearly impossible to change, deep routed beliefs woven into a society;

ignorant & uneducated villagers.

What kind of depraved human being would blow up a kid in a wheelchair with downsyndrome... probably would justify it & say the kid is a martyr, with god, and having fun with 40 virgins....

Wow, must be karma...I just read about this in my "Arab Mind" book. Excellent read I might add. Anyways, they actually will kill both, or at least try to, just not directly (or so the text hypothosizes). In the Arab culture, women are considered to be special property; in addition they retain the honor of the family. In such a masculine culture, this honor is "supposed" to be upheld at all costs (even though it's often hypocritical). So for instance, if an unmarried woman is raped, then her honor, and thus the family's honor, has been defamed. To regain some of it, it is up to her brothers and father to kill her. In addition, they now have a blood feud with the rapist, so it is their civic duty to hunt down and kill him as well. Which then starts another feud with the dead rapist's family who wants revenge.....multiply this by a million and you've got what we see today. The odd thing is, even after marriage, a woman still has a connection to her birth family. Thus, if rape occurs, it will more than likely be her birth family, and not her husband, that takes her life (if it's possible). The husband's job is to hunt and kill the rapist. Sounds screwed up, I know.

As to the hypocritical part, it is perfectly acceptable to rape a woman with no family, or if you are isolated and can get away with it without repercussion. Thus sex with concubines, even while married, is permissible and often encouraged.

The more I read, the more I begin to think the entire culture is a contradiction in beliefs...it baffles me.

Its no secret that these people have been slaughtering each other since the dawn of time.

The religion they follow is founded on murder, rape and pillaging. I mean if jesus told you all that you could keep 25% of what you kill and steal.......wouldnt you do it?
