I'm going to do a two part post mostly cause I gotta get to work and I really can't let this thread go unchecked.

For those unaware the whole hell thing was created well after the bible was written. Originally 'hell' was 'to the grave' so in short everyone either went to heaven or was stuck in limbo so to speak until they were ready to go to heaven.

Currently many Christian faiths are picking up post mortem baptisms. This was originally unique to the mormons who believed that a person ought to get one last chance to choose to make their peace with the Super Natural Big Guy.

Either tonight or tomorrow I'll go more indepth with a bit of Satanism (Anton LaVey's version not chopping up poor helpless animals version), a bit of Buddism, and toss in some Bah'ai for some good measure.

I thought Mormons believed Christ has already come back. I can't remember - it's been a while since I cared to study the useless notion of organized religion.

My favorite one when I moved to Georgia:

Some Jesus nitwit: "Have you accepted Jesus as your saviour?"
Me: "No. Why would I do that?"
Nitwit: "Well, then you're going to hell."
Me: "Uhh, what about the billions of my ancestors that didn't accept, believe, or know anything about Jesus?"
Dumbass: "Well, they're in hell."

Came pretty close to personally showing them there is no heaven or hell.

I had a girlfriend who actually believed that the world was only about 5000 years old. The Bible says so. When asked about dinosaurs, archaelogical finds, and oil... she says "God made the world to look like it had age."

I showed her pictures of how slowly corals grow in my fish tank. Then took her to a coral reef in the keys. Still no go.

I knew this relationship was never going anywhere (to make it worse she cheated on me right after having the final Jesus conversation) but I couldn't stand knowing I dated a complete moron... The point where she FINALLY questioned her religion was simple: "If God made everything like this... who made God?"

Amazingly, she had no answer from the Bible on that one. She thought my Chinese lineage is burning in hell, too.

Now that is some good shit right there! I love to have those conversations with people. Its unbelievable how unquestioning people can be when they believe in something that has no shred of proof to it.

I guess I can't really prove that they aren't. Other than you can't prove that hell exists.

It takes more faith to be atheist than it does to belong to a religion. So I'll just not give a crap until I'm closer to death. Still won't figure it out until I take the dirt nap, but maybe I'll self-reflect and determine something on my own.

I'll make my own religion where it's 40 ever-lasting virgins like a gobstopper!

Huh? Faith in what? I've heard this said before but I'm not buying it.

Dont quote me if im wrong.... but isnt the bible just a gathering of ORALLY told stories passed down??? im pretty sure at least some of it is. and dont we all know how stories can get mixed up filtering through many people.

And also where is the proof that Mary was a virgin? i think she was a slut.

and to get back to the original post, sorry i dont know the differences. all i know is that they are all evil cults.

One last point i would like to make, people sit there and pray and pray for something to happen. When something happens its a miracle, and when nothing happens "thats how god wanted it to be" or "it was his time to go".

This honestly isn't a personal attack on anyone, but based on the IDEAS presented in this post it is clear that bigotry(in the sense of your ideas presented here) resides on all sides of the issue.

Yeah. A lot of it comes from every religion telling me how wrong I am for not accepting their ideas. I wouldn't be so critical of religion if it didn't spend it's time telling me I'm going to hell.

I weighed my options once a couple years ago. I didn't want to follow a faith that relied on a diety that I couldn't prove was there. I'm a very technical person, so I need proof of something like that. Buddhism seemed like a good idea, but then I realized I didn't want people calling me a hippie.

So I finally decided that organized religion is a waste of time and I'll just go about my own way of finding meaning in life. Seems to be working out so far, and I haven't been struck by lightning yet.

Can we stop confusing religious beliefs with human actions that can sometimes be overzealous? Your beef should be with the people who misrepresent their religion, not neccessarily religion itself.

No one is perfect or knows whether you are going to hell or not. If someone claims differently run very fast away from them.

I think you're a bit confused. Mormons believe Chirst came to visit the inhabitants of the Americas after he was crucified. That was not the second coming of Christ as many churchs put it and Mormons are still waiting for Christ to come again just like many other religions.
