Quote:
By the time the six Klan founders met in December, 1865, the opening phase of Reconstruction was nearly complete. All eleven of the former rebel states had been rebuilt on astonishingly lenient terms which allowed many of the ex-Confederate leaders to return to positions of power. Southern state legislatures began enacting laws that made it clear that the aristocrats who ran them intended to yield none of their pre-war power over poor whites and especially over blacks. These laws became known as the Black Codes and in some cases they amounted to a virtual re-enslavement of blacks.
In Louisiana the Democratic convention resolved that "we hold this to be a Government of White People, made and to be perpetuated for the exclusive benefit of the White Race, and....that the people of African descent cannot be considered as citizens of the United States." Mississippi and Florida in particular enacted vicious black codes, other southern states (except North Carolina) passed somewhat less severe versions, and President Andrew Johnson did nothing to prevent them from being enforced.
These laws and the violence that erupted against blacks and union supporters in the South outraged Northerners who just a few months before had celebrated victory not only over the Confederacy, but its system of slavery as well. In protest of the defiant Black Codes, Congress refused to seat the new Southern senators and representatives when it reconvened in December 1865 after a long recess. Thus at the moment the fledgling Klan was born in Pulaski, the stage was set for a showdown between Northerners determined not to be cheated out of the fruits of their victory and die-hard Southerners who refused to give up their supremacy over blacks.
Ironically, the increasingly violent activities of the Klan throughout 1866 tended to help prove the argument of Radical Republicans in the North, who wanted harsher measures taken against Southern governments as part of their program to force equal treatment for blacks. Partly as a result of news reports of Klan violence in the South, the Radicals won overwhelming victories in the Congressional elections of 1866.
In early 1867 they made a fresh start at Reconstruction. Congress overrode President Johnson's veto and passed the Reconstruction Acts, which abolished the ex-Confederate state governments and divided 10 of the 11 former rebel states into military districts. The military were charged with enrolling black voters and holding elections for new constitutional conventions in each of the 10 states, which led to the creation of the Radical Reconstruction Southern governments.

Quote:
The name Ku Klux Klan reportedly was derived from the Greek word for circle, kyklos, with Klan added for its alliterative value. Soon after its 1866 organization in Pulaski, TN, by a small group of Confederate veterans, the Ku Klux Klan emerged as the principal organization for underground resistance to Radical Reconstruction. Klan members sought the return of home rule to white Democrats, and they utilized violent terrorism to intimidate black freedmen and their white Republican supporters.

Quote:
The party's first president, Abraham Lincoln, issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, the height of the Civil War, squelching any chance that the European powers of the day would intervene in the conflict in favor of the Confederacy. With the stroke of his pen, Lincoln destroyed the last real hope the Confederacy had for a victory.

Soon after the war ended, it was a Republican-controlled Congress that rammed through the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution that, among other things, abolished slavery, guaranteed equal protection and due process and addressed blacks' right to vote.

In the late 19th century, Democrat governors and Democrat-controlled state legislatures in the South couldn't pass Jim Crow laws fast enough. Those Democrats created a nearly century-long, legal racial caste system that relegated blacks to the lowest educational, political, economic and social strata. I have family members who grew up under Jim Crow. To hear them tell it, it weren't no joke.

And let us not forget that during the same period it was Democrats throughout the United States who organized and ran America's premier terrorist organization – the Ku Klux Klan.

And speaking of the Klan, remember the great Democrat President Woodrow Wilson? After a screening of D.W. Griffith's paean to the Ku Klux Klan, "Birth of a Nation," Wilson, turned-movie critic, said of the film: "It is like writing history with lightning. And my only regret is that it is all so terribly true."
Quote:
Moving on, in answer to the burgeoning civil rights movement in the '50s, it was Democrat governors and Democrat-controlled state legislatures in the South that placed the Confederate battle flag on their state capitol flags. It's an issue that continues to inflame racial passions even today.

In 1957, Orval Faubus, the governor of Arkansas, called out his state's National Guard to prevent the integration of Central High School in Little Rock. In response, President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent U.S. troops to the city to escort nine frightened black teens into the school past riotous mobs inflamed by Faubus' defiance of a federal court order. Faubus was a Democrat. Eisenhower was a Republican.

On June 11, 1963, Alabama Gov. George Wallace stood in the doorway of the University of Alabama to block its integration. Wallace was a Democrat. Now, I grant you, John F. Kennedy was the Democrat president who federalized the Alabama National Guard and ordered its units to the university to force its doors open to black students. But it's not generally known that the then-Sen. Kennedy – with an eye on the Democrat presidential nomination for 1960 – voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1957, the law that really got the ball rolling on federal civil rights legislation.

And it was Kennedy's brother, Robert, who in 1964 assisted the FBI's efforts to destroy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by approving the wiretapping of the man considered the heart and soul of the civil rights movement.

What about Senator Byrd?

The ex-Klansman, you see, is a Democrat. Democrats can join hate groups and utter the ugliest racial slurs and get away with it because they are Democrats.

Didn't say Repubs were all bigots. I said all bigots would choose the Repub party over the Democratic Party. I stand by the assertion (acknowledging the risk of overgeneralization.)

So are you saying that your typical bigot would choose the Democratic party, given a choice of the two? C'mon. Be honest. Though I see why you'd be embarassed by the company you keep.

No!!I did not say anything about that. You are such the Godamn little liberal, you know. You are quoted as saying that "most all bigots choose the Repub. party". Typical Dem. bullshit, to take the light off of you after your stupid & extremely ignorant statement you try to come out & state that I said thayour typical bigot would chhose the Dem. party.. Go fuck yourself!!!
You still have not commented on your assanine statement of your assumption. You see, I assume you're some fucking little pencil pushing geek, who probably lives with his mommy, who still dreams about his only girlfriend that he lost five years ago, & someone inspite of his failures & personal shortcomings thinks that he is better than everyone else, & tries to tell them how to control their life because you can't control yourself. Oh yeah did I tell you to go fuck yourself!!! If you ever want to come down to Texas & see me some time, the invite is open!!!!!

Max: I'll get my ethics advice from others.

TX: Wrong on every point. But likewise, I'm in the phonebook. And I'm not hiding behind a nickname here.

However, I do think that budding Republicans ought to at least think about the company they'll be keeping before making the move. No one wants to address my statement because it is true. Bigots vote with thier feet too.

You're asking for a lot of trouble by saying shit like that... I really would watch it if I were you!!!! Really watch it.....

IMHO I wouldn't call republicans bigots, I'd just say we have the biggest bigot running our country who happens to be a republican. George Bush representing the bigots and their ways; they hate gays and gay rights and they hate women and a womans right to chose, "Women belong in the kitchen barefoot and pregnant and gays belong in hell". People who think they are God should burn in hell, just because he says its immoral doesn't mean it is, I don't believe in pre-marital sex, but I don't think any of you are going to hell that have had sex before marriage. Granted I would never get an abortion, but who is a man to tell me I cannot? Lets fight a war for oil and have our troops who fight for our freedom not our greed become amputees. Rock on Stem Cell Research, rock on.

Would you care to address the historical evidence of racism and bigotry of the Democrats documented above or would you rather just skip over it because it soundly refutes your assertion? Of course, you should take your own advice: "Repeating a fib doesn't make it true."

And you still owe someone an appology.

Nothing wrong with getting a blow job, better than blowing our troops in half for some oil... If any of you were really into politics you'd be watching the republican convention right now, talk about embarassing, you guys are in for a world of criticism and trouble. See the guys walking around the convention with bandaids on their faces that have a purple heart on them... Veterans are going to eat the Republican Party for lunch, although this act is aimed at John Kerry(the swift boat adds were proven false, so I don't know why they continue with the low blows they have nothing else to criticise him about, and all of them wearing these bandaids probably did not have the balls to fight in Nam), it will rightfully offend all veterans who have received purple heart. Talk about immature, I thought these conventions were supposed to enlighten people not make themselves look like morons...
