Default Project: Yamaha R2, Moriwaki Killer

So, this is the official start of my Yamaha Wr250X based super-single bike project.

The idea behind this ss arose when i had come across Roland Sands 450cc super-single bikes for WERA racing.

while i felt the bikes were amazing, i felt he left out a gap in the ss lites class (125cc 2-strokes). Now, Honda does have a competitor for this class, the Moriwaki Md250H, as seen here.

Quote:

The following joint press release from Honda and Moriwaki Engineering announces the development of a light weight, 249cc, single-cylinder, four-stroke roadracer aimed at developing American youth. The MD250H (pictured above) will be sold through select U.S. Honda dealers at an MSRP of $11,699. Here is the press release.
Torrance, CA: American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and Moriwaki Engineering Japan are pleased to announce that a limited number of MD250H Powered by Honda race bikes will be offered for sale to riders eligible for the youth-oriented USGPRU road racing series.
The MD250H is powered by a 249cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke Unicam engine from Hondas popular CRF250X that has been race tuned by Moriwaki Engineering. From the wheels up, the purpose-built twin spar aluminum-framed road racer is ready-to-roll, complete with a single radial-mount front disc brake, inverted fork, Pro-Link single-shock rear suspension, lightweight wheels and tires, works-style welded aluminum fuel tank and race-ready bodywork. Riders need only apply their own paint and graphics.
Our goal in releasing the MD250H is to help develop youth and entry-level racing in America by providing high-quality, affordable entry-level machines that are fun to ride and easy to maintain, said Honda Press Manager Jon Row. To build enthusiasm for the USGPRU MD250H series, American Honda will be offering a corresponding contingency program worth $110,000. Qualified racers may receive a Pro Honda Pit Kit consisting of $890 worth of oils and chemicals. Riders with existing oil and chemicals sponsors can decline this option. For contingency details, visit hondaredriders.com.
Suggested retail price for the MD250H is $11,699. It will be sold exclusively through select Honda dealers. For more information about availability, contact your local Honda dealer, and for information about the race series, visit USGPRU > Welcome to the United States Grand Prix Racers Union.
That's all well and good, but it leaves little to freedom of brand or preference in bike style... and with the price of $12000... its a little intimidating.

So, the basis of my project is to convert a brand new Yamaha Wr250X, into a lites class worthy competitor, at a lower entry price than a full order Moriwaki or RS125

The bikes chassis will remain the same, ergo the new front end which will derive from an R6 (08 model with single radial mount caliper, re-valved for the weight of the bike, and the weight of the ride), another option will be shortening the front stock forks to ss specs (im still waiting on a call from race-tech). The wheels are looking to be Marchesinis, or Carrozzerias (mounted on Dunlop or Bridgestone slicks). the rear shock will remain the same, but shall be shortened and re-valved for road racing. the linkage may or may not remain stock, depending on performance.

The body work will consist of Honda Rs250 front fairings and tail, and the tank cover will be rendered in fiberglass (custom formed by me from a clay mold)

Rear sets are still in planning, depending on money issues at the time, i may machine a custom set, or fit up some aftermarket R6 sets.

Other parts and fittings are still in planning, and there are many things to fabricated/ and or modify, the first among them all will be pressing the WR stem into the R6 triples, allowing me to mount the front end, i will also need to make a spacer for the top R6 clamp, seeing as the thread shaft of the WR stem is thinner in diameter to the R6 top clamp hole.

This should be an exciting project, and i plan to document every step for your viewing pleasure. this will also be put towards my portfolio for my graduation at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (Industrial Design: Transportation, Bachelors Degree)

To hold you over until progress starts, here are some mock up pics of the front end in the stock triples with stock wheels, and a concept blue line sketch i did during my boredom in class today.

A little update today.

Got a call back from race-tech, it seems it will be $500 or so to shorten the stock front forks + respring and revalve

i feel this will be a better option than swapping over the R6 forks/triple tree with the Wr250X stem. although it is still an option, im leaning more towards the stock modified forks idea

This will also eliminate problems looking for wheels for the front end of the bike. with the front end staying stock, i can order a set of marchesinis for the Wr250X and bolt them right up

If i go the R6 route, i will need to find separate wheels (wrx rear, and an r6 front), along with machine the stem to fit and cutting the 2nd brake caliper mount

they both equal the same price in the end, so the stock option seems optimal right now (also with the plus of being valved exactly for this bike/rider weight)

I agree with keeping the stock forks and just modding them. Less work to be done on your end . Looking good so far! How much will it weigh in the end, and what will the power output be?

the power output should be close to stock (28hp)

i will be removing all the exup muffler valve systems, and useless charcoal canisters. along with adding an open cored exhaust and fuel management system (pc3)

should boost it a few hp, but not much

i should be shedding about 30lbs from stock (299lbs stock)

got another call from race-tech today, it seems they messed up the rates.

it will be $350 per end (front/rear)

i will definitely be going for stock modified front end now. this setup is ideal, and at a great price.

forks and shock shipping out friday

anyone need an 08 r6 fork set and lower triple clamp?

mini update

calculated suspension measurements today for shortening

the rear swingarm angle is a pretty close to being flat (flat=bad=wheel hop and suspension dive), but still has some tilt to it, not nearly as bad as the 450's that are being converted right now, we shall see how the handling turns out. the valving should take care of most hopping and dive.
