I decided that the clear windshield didnt look great on my 06 ninja 500r so went to a friends house today and we took it off... Scuffed it up a bit with some fine sandpaper.. and spray painted the inside of it with semi-gloss black spray paint... after drying for a bit put it back on and I swear it looks like a profesionally done black out tint job. You cant even tell its paint unless you get on the bike and look under it and touch it. I'm excited it came out so well. I dont really like the lines of the 500 so anything I can do to help it look better is great. And this was CHEAP at that. Just figured I would pass this little tip along to anyone who wants to change the windshield on their bike.
Radio control shops sell a paint for painting the inside of the car bodies, just like you did, some of the paints are a semi transparent. they have to be sprayed with another color to fill it in dark.
just in case someone else is thinking of doing this, you don't have to black it out 100%. it will be like a tint.

I always wondered why there was not aftermarket 'clear' bodywork for bikes that could be painted that way. Then anyone with rattle can skillz could get half decent results.
I bought a Zero Gravity DB windshield off Ebay for $12, and it was clear but the bottom needed something to hide the wiring behind the cluster. I masked off the top and bought some Krylon Fusion glass black and painted the lower inside part. Look like it shipped that way.

If R/C car bodies are any indication, it would be expensive as hell. The paint that sticks to them isn't too cheap either. Good news is the stuff is nearly indestructible, which would still get torn the hell up in a slide and still need to be replaced.
Buell has the translucents, so it can't be too hard. Of course just an airbox cover from them is as much as CF from the aftermarket. For the same $ which would rather have: clear tough bodywork that's easy to paint or carbon fiber that's half the weight and looks better the less paint you put on it? I'm guessing that's why we don't see a lot of clear bodywork except for trailer queens at bike shows.

Why not just use spray tint and give yourself the option of still being able to see out through the thing??

I personally think the translucent body work is fucking awesome. I love it on the Buells, and I think it would look pretty badass on quite a few other bikes.
Granted, you'd have to make sure the parts underneath it were kept clean and up to par, but if you took the time I think it would be pretty slick.

Heres the stuff you're talking about. I use to use this on the R/C bodies too. You can find these cans at any local hobby shop. Hobbypeople has nationwide stores. Much cheaper than the stuff used on automobiles, and you control the shades of tint by adding more layers. Hope this helps.
Go to your local hobby shop and buy spray tint. $5.63 for a 3oz can of spray tint. PACRC294 Pactra R/C Car Lexan Spray Paint, Window Tint. Spray thin take your time and build it in coats, I used 1 1/2 cans but I wanted a dark smoke. $11.62 for a tinted screen.
