I know this isn't as frequented subforum as many others, but I figured this is where it would fit best.
I want to do something with my CBR900RR over the winter months to make it look much nicer. The bike is rashed and dented on both sides, and most of the fairings on it are held together but duct tape or sheer luck. The Previous owner was not the bikes best friend, but he did do some good mods to the bike that I like alot.
So anyways, up until today I was planning on throwing a whole new fairing kit on it, 2 new sidecovers (rashed), a new gas tank, and maybe some nice shorty levers. The estimated cost of this is roughly $1,500. To give you an idea of my cheapness, that is $300 more than I paid for the bike!
Well, I was admiring my 'next in line' bike, the FZ1, when it dawned on me I could make a project out of my current bike and somewhat mold the current bike to look like the touring standard of my desire. Granted, it will be nowhere near the geometry of a real standard, with suspension being very aggressive and firm. What I can do is lose some weight, modify the steering to create a more upright position, modify the front headlight fairing and mid fairing, and custom fit a touring windscreen.
My guesstimate on this project is roughly $800 dollars, or almost half the previous plan. This includes fiberglass, primer, paint, clearcoat, windscreen, new gas tank, bar risers, and some other odd and ends that will be required.
The current bike looks like this:
And I'd like it to look more like this:
Of course it will never look like the 919, but I don't mind that. I just need to pick a color to paint the tank and plastics. What would you guys do color wise?
Anyways, if you look at the first picture, you can see where 3 bolts are to hold the upper fairing to the middle fairing just behind the front turn signal(s). What I plan to do is to keep the front fairing as it is, and to hack the middle fairing to curve around under the middle hole by the cylinder head. Basically, the middle fairing would turn into a rounded diamond of sorts. I'll strip all the decals and paint down to the plastic, and use body putty and primer to shape all the remaining plastic to a smooth curve. Any damage from the previous accidents it has endured would be fixed and reinforced by heavy fiberglass mat and resin. I'd use the same stuff to custom up a mount for the touring screen that I would be adding later. The rear plastics would remain the same and the engine would get some touchup and a detail.
