Default Givi Fastbag/Speedpack?

Anyone have or seen one of these in person? I have a chance to pick one up, and thought it might look ok on the ZX-14 with the rear cowling off for trips.

That's a pretty cool idea. If you get one, write up a review and let us know how it worked out. I might be interested myself...

Ok, here you go. This is an expandable tailbag (20-60 liter), with a hard plastic upper frame, and an upper cowling that locks into place. The adjustment straps fit under the cowling, so there's some security - it would have to be cut off to be stolen, but there's nothing preventing that, it's just nylon strapping.

This product was discontinued by Givi, I suspect for two reasons - one being the $$$ price $$$, and the other the complexity of assembly. The price was taken care of by buying a new closeout for $125. The assembly is more annoying than anything - the upper frame comes in two pieces that have to be fit into the expanding part of the bag, and then clipped together semi-permanently. It's not overly difficult to do, but makes no sense why the bag doesn't come already assembled.

Once you put it together, it straps on in a pretty standard way - four straps, each with a quick-release buckle and nice strap pads. The buckles hook onto the upper frame in such a way that they can quickly be removed to carry the bag with you - it has a handle in front and can be transformed into a remarkably ugly backpack at need. There's also instructions on how to use a passenger seat pad as a mounting/locking device which look like a cool idea; not applicable to me since the ZX has a single seat.

When installed you have two main compartments. The lower one is the expaning part of the bag, which has a very secure dual-flap velcro closure that goes over that compartment and forms the floor of the upper compartment, the roof being the hard case cover. There is room in the upper compartment for a large book and two 2-liter soda bottles, I can confirm.

The bag also comes with two liner stash bags, one for the upper and one for the lower compartment, as well as a semi-lunar little glasses case that velcros to the front of the hard top to form a little backpad if desired. They include a useless medical kit to stash in there by default.

The biggest downside of this bag is that it's big. It's ugly, too, but almost any luggage is, and at least this is a fairly close match to my ZX-14 Passion Red. The folded pleats also kind of pick up the side louvers of the ZX, so all in all it isn't terrible. I could easily pack enough for several days into this bag, and have some mild sense of security that people can't just open the top.

I wouldn't have paid the $300-400 these went for retail, but for $125 it's a pretty good deal for an occasional weekend trip. Recommended!
