Can you dremel smooth inside welds of Y pipe?
So I gutted the cat on the R1 and I notice that the weld beads on the inside of the Y pipe are pretty pronounced and it seems to me like a great idea to make the bike breath better...If I don't ruin it...
So what do you welders and experts think, if I smooth the bead out not quite flat on the inside of my Y pipe, would it compromise its structural integrity to the point of ruination? Thanks guys

I'm no expert for sure, but I've seen plenty of welds ground down. My worry with the Y-Pipe is the heat that goes through there. I would be worried that as the Y-Pipe got hotter, the welds that you ground down would be made even weaker. Hopefully an expert can chime in though.
I don't konw if you'd even be gaining that much airflow to make that endeavor worthwhile. The reward probably wouldn't outweigh the risk, so to speak.

Esentially any excess (built up) weld bead that isnt penetrating the base metal isnt doing anything. A good bead will hardly stick above the surface of the base metal, because it has fully penetrated both surfaces and made them like one continuous piece.
So...short answer, yes.

It wont hurt it unless you start grinding into the weld joint itself...in other words, only take off the excess material and you will be fine. How much fall-through metal is there?

What do you mean by fall through? The bead is protruding out from the walls looks to me to be 3-5mm on both sides all the way around...

by "fall though" i mean the amount of metal (in this case weld filler rod) that went totally through the weld joint which now sits inside the pipe...that make sense?

Yes its fine. Unless you are hamhanded. If that is the case, step away from the die grinder.
