Default Anyone tried painting a header/exhaust?

I'm contemplating giving it a try. My S4 has a chrome header and can so I don't know if it'll even work. I was thinking of getting some high temp manifold paint from an auto parts store and painting a small patch to see if it'll hold. Has anyone tried this?

Lets see, if it is chrome you will need to strip it before painting. If it is "Polished" you'll need to sand it a little bit and prime it w/ a high temp primer then paint it w/ high temp spray paint ;)

Just take it to a powdercoater for a high-temp coating that won't flake off. They'll strip it and do it for you.

is "high temp powdercoating" the same as ceramic coating?

Likely not, as "standard" powder coat and ceramic coat are 2 different processes.

It wont stay. I have seen it many times on car headers.

Good luck if you do try it.

do the ceramic stuff. i don't know the pricing, but it's pretty cheap, as in under $400.

I did mine with Auto Zone ceramic spray can stuff. It started flaking and rusting within days. I even sandblasted the stupid thing. It won't work unless you do CERAMIC coating. Powder coating will only last a few seasons due to the heat (so I was told by a pro).

Here

High Temperature Paints-POR-15 Inc.

Pick a color.

Sandblast the exhaust.

Brush this on using those foam trim brushes (throw away).

Put on several coats, allowing 12 hours or so between coats. The paint goes and goes, so you don't need alot. Last time I bought a pint, I did 5 coats on a set of chevy headers, and had half the pint left.

Wrap the thing in bubble tape / plastic when you bolt it on so you don't chip it with a wrench etc, or you can bake it in an oven.

I've used this product alot on project / drag / race cars, with ZERO problems.

You can also try this stuff

Retail Packaged, Exhaust System Coatings

If you take the time to prep it right and let each coat dry, they will hold up.

HTH
