Hey, I was wondering if its legal to put the license plate in a different location?? I am planing to buy a chain gaurd plate holder from www.STMACHINE.com but dont want to brake any laws. I live in Michigan now but planning to move to California in a few months. Can anyone tell me if its legal in both states??

best to do a search on the california DMV website for stuff like that. I've only seen them on show-bikes in cali (which get no highway time), so no idea if the CHP will harass ya about it. On the other hand, cruiser guys have them, and you see plenty of those...so maybe its no biggy.

in my experince it depends on the cop I live in ohio and ride with cops/deputies and OSP and three of those guys have there plate mounted like that but we have still been puled over for it before. By the way if its not law they can't write you for it but whatever you do don't carry a copy of the code with you to prove it LOL!!! cops hate smartass's I guess and they will find somthing to write you for I can promise you that...

i'm pretty sure that the "off to the side" license plate is 50 state legal, but only if the license plate is right way up (i.e. horizontal). Harley just manufactured a bike this year that has that and combination brake/turn signal lights (check out the harley 1200cc nightster, say what you will about harleys, if i had the money, i'd buy one in a heartbeat!).
the sideways (vertical) plate holders i'm pretty sure are only legal in some states (but don't ask me which ones). that being said, i've known several people in california that put their plates on like that and never gotten a ticket for it. however, if you do get one of those, make sure to put some kind of light on it, or you'll definitely get pulled over.
