Default how do you clearcoat a raw fuel tank?(pics of progress)

i'm in the middle of completely striping my fuel tank and i'm about 70 percent finnished.

i was looking for a way to polish the tank in a way that it flows with the frame.
not to bright or to dark. anyone have exp. with this? i also wanted to know if there is a clearcoat out there what would adhere to a raw tank. i planned on making all the indentations black and leaving the natural look of the steel, just like it is. that is, after i can find a way to buff all the small scratches out!
3 people and 7 1/2 hrs later, here are some pics of the progress

i also want to blackout the indents where the legs are placed on the tank.

I am pretty sure there is someone on here that has cleared a raw tank, I will see if I can find the thread.

You can clear it, but you'd be better off having a professional do it. I paint half a dozen custom choppers a month so I deal with raw metal all the time. I've also done panels and parts where I grind the steel and work shapes and patterns in the metal before clearing and can also candy over that for some really cool effects. Is your tank steel or aluminum? If it's steel you have to make sure there are absolutely no contaminants on the surface. If there is a pinhole, for example, from something that doesn't let the clear stick, that spot will rust and the rust will spread. I've seen it happen.

If you need any advice or whatever just let me know. Or if you're in IL just send it on up, I'm by Milwaukee.

That sounds like a LOT of work!! It would look good tho. I saw a bike a guy polished the steel frame, looked awesome. The tank would definately be different.

Instead of polishing it, you should take it and have it sandblasted. It will match the frame a lot better and be 10x easier.

Yeah, sandblasted would really look good. I had a small piece sandblasted and it came back clean as a whistle.

You may just want to get some Mother's aluminum polish and see how it works - assuming it's aluminum. Otherwise blast it and call it a day.

If it's steel you'll have to protect it or something...even if you don't pour water over it or ride in the rain it's going to rust. That's what sandblasting is for...clean the metal of all contaminants including rust and dirt, clean the welds, etc.

yea i figured as much. somthing should come of this shortly. i was also thinking about just doing everything one color, riding it for a few seasons and then upgrading to a newer 600. i'm really liking the 636 and the 6r kawi's
