Tips cannot be mandatory in my book. The tip is proportionate to the service.

18% is what it works out to at the end of the night at most places if the service sucked tip less but no matter how bad the service is they are still serving you and deserve at least 10%

try comming in to my bar and not leaving a tip on your first drink even if your the only person in there you going to be waiting a while for the next one and god help you if we are busy cause i know i wont

I think they changed the restaurant name after this. There are quite a few hits on the original name "Soprano's Italian and American Grill" about this issue. Now there's a "Sporano's Pizzaria" in Lake George. I wonder if all the bad publicity caused a problem

For me:

If the food's hot but late, it's the cook's problem not the waiters and I don't penalize them for it. If the food's cold and late, it's the waiters problem and they get dinged.

In general though I tip about 15% (roughly; I don't precisely figure it out) and a few points more if it's a group like our group ride a couple of weeks back. There were 18 or so of us at 6 tables. She provided separate checks for each table which was cool. I think she got a 40% tip from our table in all. Don't know about the rest.

At a couple of places where the food's particularly good, I'll grab the manager and offer a tip to the cooks. One time they refused it so I told the manager to buy them a round of beers (that was a Texas Steakhouse type place).
