Ok you cheap bastards listen up! Minimum wage is $6 bucks an hour but servers make $2.13 an hour, ya know why??? They depend on you to give them a tip. Instead of mandatory tips maybe you guys would like to see prices increased to make up for all the cheap shitheads out there. If you get ANY kind of service you should leave something, shitty service....don't go back!

AND THEY Chose that job knowing this! Why should we supplement what their employer is too cheap to pay for!?

If they knowingly go into a job that pays well below the FEDERAL MINIMUM wage, hoping that TIPS will supplment or even out what they would GET IF THEY WERE earning minimum wage, they ARE FUCKING STUPID!

All my "waithelp" jobs paid MORE than minimum wage. BECAUSE I was not stupid to fall for that bull crap!

Then they should find another job that doesn't make them work for slave wages.

That doesn't stop restaurants from rising their prices while keepin their shitty service staff.

exactly. And if the servers dont like not getting tips, FIND ANOTHER FUCKING JOB.

Woah WOah WOAH! We are talking about New York here!!!

Simplest Solution: Get the HELL out of New York.

Over here in California, we dont have all this MANDATORY TIP shit floating around. You tip if you fell you have been served well and believe the waiter/waitress should get a little extra (usually 15%)

....Mandatory my ass!

I usually tip very well.... I do hate the fact that they add it on there automatically on their own sometimes. Every place that has done that to me though has made it very clear that it would happen with a certain party size.

My sister barely made it as a waitress for a few weeks as she was in the police academy.... Thank god she starts her new job this week as an officer. I'm tired of paying all the bills around here. She said you never forget who doesn't tip you well also. Sux to be them if she pulls them over.

I'm sure your sister would not appreciate you hinting to the fact that she would violate state law in abusing her powers of arrest towards individuals who didn't tip her well. It doesn't speak well of her character and would generally be considered conduct unbecomming.

After working as a waiter for 3 years I think mandatory tips are a lifesaver. Try working your ass off for 3 or more hours taking care of ONE large table (this is the only money you'll make that day, not counting your $2.37/hour) and for whatever reason your table is unsatisfied. You can't please everyone, and if the food comes out wrong (the kitchens fault) the waiter suffers. Screw that, considering most restaurants have a "Tip pool" to pay for hostesses, etc, if you don't get tipped you end up LOSING money for waiting on that table. That's crap. Mandatory tips are necessary for large parties, where a workers income is based almost entirely off that table for the day. The patrons are assholes for not reading the receipt and leaving a proper tip. So are you all if you don't tip decently well for decent service.

If you're only making $2.37/hour, you should talk to your employer about offering fair compensation or you should consider finding a different job. The service industry low pay is as it is because people tolerate employers paying their staff inappropriate wages. Don't support the problem by accepting such a position under these circumstances.

As a waiter in Atlantic City (a few years back) the Feds took an automatic 8% out of any tables bill of fare, assuming that I would get a 15%-%25 tip. So, if $100 tab stiffed me, I ended up paying 8 dollars for serving them. I know that's not the case in every resteraunt, but it was in AC.

Basically, what I'm saying, if you aren't going to tip for GOOD service, stay home and microwave it.

Eh, I didn't complain about it because on average I made about 13.00/hour after taxes. Not bad for a 17 y.o. That doesn't change the fact that I could go home with $7 one night and $280 the next because people can't afford to tip more than 5-10%, which barely covers the 3% I have to put into the tip pool. Don't tell me to go change an entire work-life culture that's been in place for longer than I've been alive, go teach people to have some respect for people who work their asses off to give them an enjoyable meal.

So how much real work have you done in the restaurant world? I'm sure the owners could pay the wait staff 8-10 dollars an hour, but then the customer gets to pay 5 bucks for a soda and no more free re-fills. Gratuities allow the restaurant to provide you a service (wait staff) at a minimal charge to you (15%-25%).

If people have a problem with that, go to Mickey D's or stay home. The reason waiters/waitresses accept the $2.37/hour is that most people aren't asshats and tip when they receive GOOD service and the waiters can make some decent coin for it.

Yeah, there are better jobs out there that pay more money. But that isn't always an option for some people.

I've done alot. Wait help cook, and delivery. Yet we were paid above minimum wage, BECAUSE my employers knew people would not tip.

Still the prices were kept the same. Only reflective in inflation and rising food costs (ie instead of selling soda at $1 we raise it to $1.10), that wasn't due to the restaurante losing money; just due to the distributors rising costs.

Anyone who's foolish enoughto accept a job that pays you under minimum wage gets what they deserve.

Funny. Schools, libraries, the state; after school programs; interns at a hospital or physicians office (none require much experience). The jobs are out there; receptionists, concierge desks etc

No... it would just be ironic to be getting a ticket from someone who was serving you food two weeks earlier wouldn't it? Knowing my sister.... (being the bitch she can be.) She won't let anyone off of a ticket or anything. I know if she pulls me over she will be loving the fact that I will get a ticket.

I'll make sure to kick and spit at the next person who waits on my table

Yes, it's true. There are many other jobs out there. So, there should be no waiters or waitresses period.

I worked a bit in the industry myself. As a waitress, I can gurantee you that you weren't making that much above min wage. You still relied on your tips. You still had to claim them (whether you did or not is between you and your mirror). When someone stiffed you after you had rendered GOOD service, you were pissed. I feel pretty secure in saying that you didn't just take it with a grain of salt because there were better jobs out there.
