Default Ohh shiett Look here.

Ok, I have a question for everyone that I'd like to have an honest opinion answered. Its pretty long though.

My friend has it good. His parents gives him what he needs and sometimes gives him money for the things he wants too. Yeah well he's been griping about how his 2002 Ford Explorer sucks up gas and how he thinks his parents should pay for his gas (he drives 400 + miles a week; school, work, and stuff). His reasoning is that he works his ass off and his parents should see this and buy him the car he really wants and also pay for gas and stuff.

So I asked him since he works so hard, where does all the money go. He says most of the money goes into savings and he also uses it to buy stuff that he wants now and then, but none of the money goes to his parents. He also says that he isn't pleased with life b/c he hasn't gotten anything accomplished. Yet he's a senior in high school also taking 11 hours in college, along with that, holding down like 5 part time jobs. And he still complains abut how he has no time to do anything and that his parents should foot the bill for the things he wants to do on the side. Plus he's unhappy b/c he has no time for what you call a social life. I mean he's a great guy and everything, its not like he goes drinking or clubbing and blows his money there.

But what do yall think? Should his parents HAVE to buy him the car he wants (BTW he wants a Ford Excursion) and HAVE to give him money for gas and stuff just because he chooses to drive so much to go to work?

Please give an honest answer, and don't be jackasses about it. After a few people post up their opinions, I will post up mine, b/c I don't wanna taint anyone's answers by posting mine already. Im not trying to prove that this person is wrong or that my opinion is right... im just trying to see what everyone thinks.

Any high-school kid should not have a Ford Excursion or even a 2002 Explorer unless they are making payments on it themselves by woking an afterschool/weekend job.

Lets just assume some kids parents, spend $20,000 (pulled that figure out of a hat) to buy their kid a shcool vehicle. IMHO it's much better for them to maybe spend $5000 on an older dependable vehicle (that may not look all that cool), and then put the other $15,000 away for the kids college education. Weather the parents can afford to or not, I just can't see any reason a senior in high school needs a nice, expensive vehicle. Even if he is a good kid, I still don't see the point.

I have two kids and I would heip them with life or financial times but I would not buy them a car they have to work for what they get but I would help that's what parents do. I worked my ass off to buy a body shop and my parents helped some but I almost lost every thing first. I belive to truly appreceate(sp) somthing you have to work for it. I was never handed anything not because my parents did'nt care but because they wanted me to work hard at evert thing I do. So I think you friend should be paying rent first of all and paying for his own stuff. It's time for your friend to grow up and find out just how hard the real world can be.

If his parents have the cash (notice I said IF), I see nothing wrong with getting him a vehicle of his choice...According to your info, he's busting his butt pretty good...And that's admirable...If he was just sitting around doing a whole lot of nothing, that's a different story...

He sounds like he's on a good path, and that's something alot of parents can't say...If he continues on this path, he'll get through college fast and end up with a great job...Something we all want for the kids of today...

I agree with Justin726 completely. No person in high school should have a vehicle of that caliber unless they pay for it themselves. He has my respect, the kid works his ass off and he will have something to show for it in the long run. But, he needs to maintain, upgrade is not a necessity.

IMO, dennis hit the nail on the head.

If the kid wants a new car, then HE should work for it. Parents shouldn't give their kids EVERYTHING.

This is fucking hilarious because I just finished reading the cover story article in Newsweek. It talks about how this generations children are getting everything they want and that the want never stops, the article goes into many things such as teen suicides due to depression of having everything, etc. It is CRAZY, however its true. You all should read it.

He should be very grateful for what he has been given.

I bought my first car when I was 17, paid for it all by myself, not a penny from my parents, I never got anything GIVEN to me by them, except on my birthday and christmas. They NEVER paid for gas, never paid for insurance, everything I earned. The head gasket blew on my car, cost me 3200 to fix, my dad loaned me the cash, I paid him back every cent. What's the point of me telling this? I don't really know.
Anyway, I now have a decent truck and a very nice motorcycle, all paid in full, by myself, without help from anyone. Sure I would have liked my parents to buy me everything, who wouldn't, do I think they should have? Nope. Personally I think he sounds extremely ungrateful, he should just be happy he even has a car, which apparently he didn't even have to pay for. Damn, spoiled people
