Agreed...but in terms of aiming, there's no significant difference between a shotty and a rifle at 3-4 yards either. Point & click.

Telling (or letting them find out) the Soviet Union we had Nike missile sites was tactically a bad move from that perspective as well, yet nuclear missiles and racking the slide of a shotgun serve the same purpose: "detergent."

Yep, been using firearms since I was 6 years old. (closely supervised back then of course.)

another random fact, did you know that in Texas if more than 3 native americans are on your property, it can be considered an attack and you are allowed to begin shooting?

Cite please?

Before I respond, that sounds like a bad mis-quote of a twisted statistic (the "43 times more likely" bit from the Kellerman paper)....which is a BS statistic.

Right becouse your ninja man, and you are going to sneek up on the burgler, becouse all the situations are Ideal, and you did not just get woke up in the middle of the night, having to fumble around your bedroom to find the lightswitch, shotgun and falshlight with crusties in your eyes.

You go Rambo.

I disagree with 12ga being "overkill" and that 20ga:

Because...you can buy "managed recoil" rounds in 12ga that are effectively the same as 20ga rounds.

An essentially equivalent load will be easier to shoot from the 12ga as well - because the gun is heavier. Less recoil to the shooter. Easier for the wife if she has to use it.

I would agree that loading up 3.5" magnum shells in a 12ga would be overkill for HD...but if you stick to the 2 3/4 managed recoil loads, I think it's superior to the 20ga. Probably a cheaper gun, too.

(Note: In shotgun terms, "magnum" and "managed recoil" refer mostly to the amount of lead per round, not so much the velocity. a 2 3/4 shell in 00 buck might have ~ 9 pellets. a big (3.5 inch) magnum is probably going to be shooting 15 or so. And it'll probably hurt like hell.

A managed recoil will probably shoot 7...much like a 20ga.
Your partially right, but a 20 guage really has NO recoil to speak of, it is cheaper, the ammo is cheaper, and it will do just fine.

Well here in GA there's a town named Kennesaw that requires all homes to own at least 1 firearm, (unless you're not legally allowed to, i.e. felon, mental patient, etc.) and the last time I heard, there wasn't a whole lot of homeowners getting shot with their own weapons. Or any, that I've heard of.
