Frankly I think it's misguided to have the chamber empty and rely on the "clack clack" to scare someone off. It's been scientifically proven that the sound of a shell loading does not cause bad guys to lose bowel control.
If it comes down to needing to shoot someone with a shotgun, I want to shoot them NOW, not after I rack ar ound.
How do you scientifically prove you cannot scare someone?
Lets start simple
Your walking thru someplace your not supposed to be and you hear a loud noise, do you A, laugh and ignore it, or does B your heart race like crazy.
Its B. doesnt take a genius to figure that out, or maybe at least someone with a higher IQ than 10.
For the record the sound of racking one in the chamber does scare someone off. I had a guy breaking into my house, as I jacked a round in the chamber of my pistol you heard him pause, then he took off running.
SO use your fucking head and some common sense, IM tired of that dead lame argument.
4. I "racked" the shotgun several times during the tests, and no bystanders lost control of their bowels.
Conclusion: Racking a shotgun will not make the bad guy faint.
Hey, those aren't bad guys OR zombies. Those are a bunch of gun nuts.
As far as not using bird shot - that does makes sense. My step pops hunts quail, and brings it home (tasty!). They actually get rather close to the quail when they shoot - and there's not a ton of cleaning to do.
Besides, if zombies attack, I need something that can penetrate the skull and destroy the brain. Double ought is going to have to be the minimum shell I carry.
heavy bird shot works fine. #4 was recomended for years. light birdshot no but having been dusted by it im here to say it will wake you the fuck up.
4buck was used heavily in Nam, its what I keep in my shotguns.
As well as for gun questions your better with a gun forum.
Single ought is what I have right now, but my concern is that I have a small child and a stupid dog.
I don't know anything about this box dude, but penetrating 6 sheets of drywall from 12 feet is actually pretty impressive to me. Come to think of it, you're probably right about #4 - it'd be fairly close quarters if someone broke into my house. I'd be lucky to be more than 8 feet away before having a shot.
And although you're right about the gun forum - I actually like you guys and respect your opinions. You know how we are with noob bike people. I'd expect nothing less from the gun forum folks ;)
Look most criminals do not want confrontations, if you read most shooting reports they were wounded and ran. A few times people do still come at you but its rare.
Also consider if someone is staring down a large diameter barrell it will change there mind in a hurry as well.

Yeah, this box of truth guy has always gotten on my nerves a little bit. So many people take his word as gospel for some reason.
I've always been of the opinion that #4 buck or #6 bird is the way to go. Decent penetration, you'll fucking kill a human within 20 feet, or at least cause serious damage, but it will easily be stopped by a stud in your wall.
Personally, as much of a gun enthusiast as I am, all I need for home defense is a baseball bat.

Tone down the hostility, eh?
I was trying to put a little humor here with the BoT reference as well as educate the OP...what are your qualifications here? I've taken a carry class and being that you're from Montana, I'm well aware you may have as well. No offense intended - I'm just asking so I know where you stand.
I'm NOT claiming to be an expert, but I am attempting to address this from multiple angles - practical as well as legal. Different states have different laws so different situations may apply. Some states have "home as castle" laws. Others don't.
I've had two friends who took a carry class in Florida tell them that their instructor specifically recommended that if they're going to carry a firearm, carry pepper spray as well. Other people, including myself, have been taught that it's a pretty stupid idea to be carrying more than type of weapon for a variety of reasons....for starters...
1 - if you shoot someone, you'll have to defend your decision to use lethal force rather than the pepper spray
2 - when the fit hits the shan, you won't have time to ponder your responses - you should have one response, stop the attack. You're not a cop attempting to control a suspect, you're trying to stop someone who's intending to kill you or your loved ones. Why risk that they're hopped up on PCP and won't be stopped by pepper or taser, etc.
Getting back to the case at hand...yeah, presenting the sound of a chamber being loaded will scare off some people. Most criminals are not known for their brains, however....though I will grant you they wouldn't volunteer to stick around and get shot any more than I would.
I personally would not choose to defend my home and loved ones with less than 00-buck. #4 is close to acceptable, but I wouldn't risk it. Any "bird" shot is out of the question. It'll make a hell of a mess but it won't anyone down, especially when they're jacked on adrenaline.
Me, I'm not saying I want to kill the person, but I want them stopped. Now. So the cops can come and arrest them or call the coroner. Not chased off so they can come back with their buddies and try to exact revenge for messing up their face w/ bird shot.
edit:
And for the record...don't expect a shotgun to take someone off their feet from the force of the blast. That's purest hollywood. Basic physics says that's impossible and the mythbusters have thrown the practical proof up already. If you see a person/animal that's been shot jump, it's from the "oh shit I've been shot" reflex, not the force of the bullet. Mythbusters, for example, set up a situation attempting to achieve the maximum kinetic energy transfer from a .50BMG round. They got close, but as powerful as that round is it's hard to capture it as a pure kinetic hit rather than a penetration hit. Nevertheless, they did get a round to stop in "buster" at point blank range. It knocked him back about 1 inch.
A decent used mossberg 500 can be found for $200, it will require a bit of looking though. In my area, finding a comparable Remington is impossible. Don't be afraid to buy a shotgun with a 28" barrel and wood furniture - you can always cut down the barrel to a more suitable 18.5-20'.

I like the Model 500,but make sure if you get a used one to get a dual rail model and stay away from a well worn single rail model. All the newer 500s are dual rail now as the single rails were discontinued. I bought a new single rail model quite a few years ago and they feel a little sloppy when your jack in a new round. I can't imagine how bad/crappy a old, worn out one feeds/feels.
Personally,I really liked the Remington 870 Youth model 20ga. I bought new later on much better than my old 500.
It seemed to be better built, more solid, fed the shells better and being a youth model in 20ga with a shorter barrel it was lighter and much more maneuverable.
Also,a 20ga has more than enough poop to take care of just about any uh..Zombies you may run across and you can shoot them all day long and still be able to use your arm/shoulder when your done shooting.
