Do protests really work? Most people avoid the gas station for one day, but go and buy it the next day.
Have you noticed the gas prices falling just a little occassionally? It's not because of protests, it's because people are learning to conserve more. The best way to lower gas prices is for everyone not to waste the gas. Car pool. Ride you bike to work. Walk. Take the bus or the subway. Ride your motorcycle or scooter to work. Stay home instead of runing around. Combine your shopping trips with the times you are going home from work instead of making a special trip. Conserve.
Still, I don't like seeing the government pointing fingers at oil companies when they colllect less than the taxes on the gas.
I also wouldn't be surprised if one of the reasons for record profit is the fact that gas refineries haven't been allowed to expand for so long. So there loans from building 40 years ago are paid off and there isn't anything to put money into. Whereas if they could build more refineries, than they would be putting some of the money back into producing gasoline. I don't know this for sure, just theory on my part.
You have hit it right on the head right there with the number of refineries that were closed the gas prices went up. They did a report on this a few years ago saying that 12 years ago there were over 300 gas refineries in the us and 10 years ago that number was down to just a little over 100 and there is no heavy oil refineries in the US anymore and if there was we wouldnt have to buy the expensive oil from the middle east we could buy the cheap stuff from countrys in south america.
We need to start a website to help organize ways we can protest the gas prices.. We, the people of America, have gotten too lazy and dependant on the Gov't to solve all of our problems for us. Whatever happened to "They are few, but we are many"
Does anyone have suggestions, empty server space, web design skills that could help get this up and running...
Maybe call it "The Texas Tea Party" or whatever
Maybe we could pick 1 single chain of gas stations to use, creating competition in the gas prices..
Suggest that everyone only drives 55 on the interstates.. (lowering the demand and also bringing attention to the protest)
Put up protest signs on your cars (in legal, safe spots)
Bumper stickers
And when enough people are supporting maybe begin full protest demonstrations. (All being legal)
I'm sure there's many people on here that would support this cause because I know this is an issue that affects everyone, so feel free to suggest any and everything..
Except for the part about simply using less gasoline, none of that would help. Protests may sometimes change things in government, but they do not change the reality of oil prices (or the prices of just about any other good or service with small profit margins.)
Boycotting one company is pretty much impossible. The general population has no realistic way of knowing who's gasoline is in a given station.
When i buy a bike...my accountant includes it in my yearly tax filing because theyre classified by the federal government as a low emission vehicle..... been doing it for years
That's odd considering that the average motorcycle creates pollution equivalent to several cars.
In fact, when I search the U.S. Tax Code I find zero hits on the term "motorcycle."

i heard this idea from someone a while back that suggested using only BP, they said it was British Petroleum and therefore all the profits are going to Britan..
1 question i have that someone may can answer for me.. So we buy crude from Iran for $135/barrell or whatever it is that given day, therefore the oil we have domestic sells for $135/barrell? Is that the way it is, i have no idea I'm just asking...

we don't use our own oil because the government is saving it for military use when doomsday comes and we have to fight the whole world.
when is that anyway, next 4-5 years? (if McCain wins of course)

that kind of makes me want to get in to the horse raising business... once there's no more oil it looks like that'll be the only mode of transportation available... man, that's gonna suck that shit really hurts my balls LOL!!
But you know since ya'll informed me on how much the Gov't actually profits off of each gallon. They'd be crazy to even try to get auto makers to actually make electric cars that require little or no fuel.. Then where are they going to get all their billions??? What are they going to do sell $5,000 car tags? Or just raise income tax by about 20%

High prices are the solution to high prices. If you want progress to take place, be happy every day you see crude edge higher towards infinity.
Funding for solar firms, wind firms, cleaner coal technology, more efficient farming methods, goes up proportionally with crude prices.
The best way to short crude [bet it's going down] is to short solar companies, not oil companies. Those who are really benefiting from higher oil prices are NOT oil companies, most benefit from higher USAGE and NOT just higher prices, XOM [Exxom Mobile] is a good example.
99% of the 'solutions' you hear, both from goof balls like the OP, email chain letters, and the government are laughable.
Supply peaked in late 2004. Demand rises everyday. There will be fluctuations both ways that are out of whack [today is a good example], but the overall trend is clear.

I'm not 100% sure if what I said is 100% true. IT's one of those stories you hear around the water cooler.

Yeah, you do that. Let us know when you're a billionaire.

They might do one of those things. Or maybe, just tax electricity? Yeah, I know it's rocket science to figure this stuff out, but still.

The oil goes from the oil companies to the refineries (in here is where futures trading occurs) and then goes to the distributors and then the stations. All of these levels get their cut. The oil company, in selling its crude oil, makes less than 10% profit. Recently refiners have been making almost no profit. The stations mainly sell gasoline to cover the costs of the pump hardware and the majority of their profit comes from sales within the store (food, condoms, alcohol, etc.)
The futures trading, which is done not only by speculators, but by hedgers themselves, is responsible for much of the price increases. But this, in turn, is because of rapidly increasing demand from developing countries, primarily China, Russia, and the Middle East. If demand from those areas wasn't rising so quickly, futures wouldn't be driving up the costs. So again it brings us right back to supply and demand.
Our oil, BTW, mostly comes from Canada and Venezuela.
You will just have to grin & bear it, for prices are going to be going higher. Remember to that most other countries pay more for your gas for your m/cs along with your cages.
I started riding & driving when petrol was 24 cents a gallon. Yesterday I noted it had shot up to $5.64 a gallon only it does not look as bad for we are with the metric of litre.
Also in this Province of B.C. ONLY the Province is coming in with something you have never faced being a CARBON TAX that hikes up the price of fuel to your m/c or your cage, but also to oil, to home heating oil, to Natural Gas, to coal, & such. This goes into effect on July 1st of '08.
Mind you the Federal Govt is sold on said CARBON TAX & planning on ALL Cdn Provinces of paying for a NATION WIDE FEDERAL CARBON TAX sometime in the near futures.
Always petrol has been at a much lower price then here in Canada no matter what the value of the Cdn dollar is or was.
Of interest we have oil in our fields in the Province of Alberta to also off shore, to our Tar Sands AND we sell most of it to the USA. NOW if Canada cuts off the oil being sold to USA then good chance prices of petrol will be much higher then now.
Do any of you do the shopping for food products at your home? Had an idea that most do not & many of you count on greasy spoon places to restaurants to also fast food joints to take home prepared food. Those left are probably a small percentage.
I do all my shopping for I am a bachelor & do all my own cooking or preparing of food products. The trucking of food products is steadily increasing the price of food products to cleaning soaps to you name it.
In a while you will also find some items will be around he old price, but then if you check you will find the containers are SMALLER when it comes to the products & YES some of the firms are already advertising their containers are small because what is in them is better. Believe me transporting or trucking products to items all around Cdn or the USA is going to mean a hike in cost of said items!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
