Definately have the check made out to you. If they think you might screw him/them, show them the bill.

If the bills are in your name, it all comes back to you, not to mention it's just easier (and smarter) that way.

Bills are in your name.

Put it all on paper the way you want it. Either they will accept or they wont.

Like you said you have had good and bad experiences. Its your place so CYA.

PIITB (the mom)?

J/k, but in regards to your question, I have the same arrangement with my roommate/landlord. I pay a base monthly rent, plus a share in the utilities. I have a credit card and school loans to build my credit.

His mom wanting him to write his own checks to the utility company is dumb, really. If she wants him to build credit, then have her get him a credit card that he has to pay off. Everyone knows that is the easiest way to start out building your credit.

exactly, theres no reason for him to be paying the utility company. the bill is in your name so you pay it and he pays you. otherwise you cant be expected to put your credit in his hands. like the others said, tell the mom to get the kid a credit card with a 500 dollar limit and do the buy and pay thing

I guess that the whole check-to-utility-companies is a deal breaker then? Sounds like the classic red herring attack if you ask me.

Put your foot down?

Flat rate is the only way to go. otherwise you will get the "well it was only this much this month why is it so much this month?

Or maybe have flat rate plus so much for a utility bill.

and 400 a month for a room?
LOL holy shit I get screwed in this area, I am renting out a 2 bedroom house with a 3 car garage for 450 month. And its a pretty decent place.

your right , your the boss and have to cover your A$$

lots of time utility companies will not accept checks other than the name on the account, but I'm not relying on a teeagers mom to pay my bills and you shouldnt either.

what shes trying to do is ensure he's not getting over charge for utilities IMO

But you are the landlord, set your requirements or let them go elsewhere.

Guys- you live in Montana. Seriously.

Back in Detroit, a tiny 2-bedroom apartment was about 1200 a month MINIMUM. My sister lived in Manhattan for a while. Holy SHIT. She has since come to her senses and moved to Brooklyn.

Hell- even I live in a VERY cheap town, and I still pay 500/month for my 2 bedroom house with a one car garage.

Depends where you are, in my town, that is even cheap, but my renter pays every month and is a clean freak, so I would rather lose some money than have to put up with morons moving in and out all the time and having to repair after them.

Other areas are more on par with the rest of the nation (average) and yes, I know how much some places can go for, had a friend who lived in NY, paid like 4k for her apartment a month. always bragged how much she money she made, im like no you dont, you lose it all living in your overpriced brook closet.

Could you pay that bill with someone else's credit card? Maybe have the kid get a credit card to build credit, and pay the entire bill on the card, then you give him half the money once the bill comes...

If you don't pay all of your utilitiy bill they will cut off your heat and lights. They won't leave your half on.

He gives you the money, you pay the bills. End of story. There is no logic behind using another method.
