From someone who lives in California and works in the gasoline industry: I learned some new things....and as much as we all drive I thought this would be helpful.
TIPS ON PUMPING GAS
I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in Petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon..
Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.
A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.
One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount. Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some f the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope t his will help you get the most value for your money.

WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON
Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even be good for us! The Saudis are boycotting American goods. We should return the favor. An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS.
Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia . Just buy from gas companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis. Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-up the tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my family, and my friends.
I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil.

My aunt has been trying to convince my family of this shit.
The ground is always the same temperature, and the extra five-ten minutes it would take me to fill up my tank on the "slow" speed is better spent doing something I actually NEED to do.

If you ever come to B.C. Canada remember that a gallon of gas is well over $5.00 a gallon & come July lst there is a Carbon Tax going on as well.
Tack in that there is a screw-up in paying for your fuel. No longer are you able to fill up & then go to the office or store & pay for your fuel. You have to guess how much you need, tell them, then fill up. If you were a bit short then your tank is not filled up, but if you said to much is money then you can shut off & you will get the exchange in coins.
True in some cases, presently, I think a few have pumps where you gas card can be put into use or your debit card, the number is taken, & then whatever you take, along with pressing what octaine be it 87, or 90 or 91.
Sort of screwd up over to many filling up & taking off without paying. Seems a 21 yr old tried to stop one from STEALING the fuel they had taken in & ran over him to drag him to death some distance.
True a bit screwie, but that is what it is like in this part of B.C. Canada.

I want PROOF of the difference of one gallon with the temp at xx degrees and then a gallon at 10 degrees warmer than that. I also want to see the amount difference between fast and slow pumping.

I think it's BS.
it is true that there will be a volumetric change with temperature change (i don't feel like looking up the rate now), the op's email is BS because the tank and lines are buried underground. the temperature will not change significantly throughout the day, therefore the volume remain relatively constant.

I think it's BS because in San Jose, we're paying about $3.98 on average for regular unleaded right now! Premium's around $4.10, and diesel's over $4.30 at the moment.
I am a professional petrolium dispenser. From what I have gathered over the years of pumping gas, I can confirm all of this. I've heard these tips several times.
In regards to the "slow" setting, it's really not that much of a difference. Sometimes, when people are bitching about being in a rush and to make it snappy, I put it on slow. Like I said, not much of a difference but it makes me feel like I'm doing my part. In fast mode, our pumps will do 6 gallons a minute. I'm not exactly sure about "slow" but I'm guessing around 5 gallons. So let's say a 15 gallon tank will fill in 2 and a half minutes. If you go slow, it should still only take 30 seconds longer.
If you really are in a hurry, don't get gas right when the station opens. Most of the time, it takes a while for the pumps to prime and it can take up to 15 minutes to pump $5 in gas. Both places I have worked at are like this so I'm assuming most, if not all, are the same way.

Underground is gonna be the same temp all day. The whole vapor thing probably ammounts to a very tiny loss of fuel to vapors.
The only rule I go by is don't fill up when the supply truck is pumping fuel into the gas station tanks.
+1
i love how people think they knw stuff just cause they work for a company in that industry.
average joe- i just installed a pioneer avic1 in my car and it doesnt sound right
industry guy- i work for pioneer, you need to change the eq settings to +2 +4 -6
average joe- ohh thanks, so your like a sound technician or something?
industry guy- no im an accountant
average joe-wtf

The gas is filtered as its pumped, so I wouldn't worry about getting dirt fromt he tanks. Gas stations don't want to be pumping dirt through their pumps, or they'd be replacing them more often. Anyways, I don't think there's very much dirt in the tanks anyways, with all the service stations having newer tanks, that were installed clean, and clean gasoline going into the tanks, how much crap do you think is in there? I'm sure there's some, but not enough to worry about.
