the town pump truck stops here in montana are not requiring you to prepay for your gas, fucking annoying to say the least, I avoid them like the plague.

its all sounds like BS.
first of all, gasoline in liquid state will occupy more volume if its hotter, but the difference in volume over a few degrees is probably less than 0.1%

and as for filling up with the tank half empty: if its a hot day, gasoline in the tank will evaporate always at the same rate, no matter if the tank was empty, or half full, or 3/4 full. if there was gasoline in the tank and its a hot day, the gas vapor will escape as soon as you open the cap.

so in conclusion, the best way to pay less at the pump is by: riding a bike, or driving an electric car ;)

the only thing that MAY make a difference in the volume, would be if the gas was just pumped into the ground from a tanker. It could then gain a little volume until it reached the below ground temp. Unless of course it was below ground temp outside, then the opposite would happen.

Paying before you pump? wow, I've never been to a gas station that does that. I think it's somewhat of a good idea though.. I worked at a gas station one summer during high-school, and everyday that I worked a couple people in shit cars would steal gas. Heck, I even got their license plates, they were on video, and I could describe them, but the police wouldn't do anything about it.

I fail to see how forcing you to pay before gassing up is punishment.

Most stations around here are pump first pay later. Pay at pump does ftw!

exactly what i was talking about, he owns a gas station bfd. to test this you would have to take multiple samples at multiple times of day then take them to a pretty accurate scale and weigh all your sample and then tabulate the results you think just cause he owns a gas station he has done this?? really?? i would bet alot of money he hasn't and is just talking out of his ass

around here it seems to be in the "bad" areas you pay first, you go out to the suburbs and you can pump first. i always go for the cc at the pump.

Becouse I now have to make two trips to the station, one to pay first and another to get my change becouse I had no Idea how much it would cost.
I am not so sure that is it all about catching people who steal, I think its more to encourage people to use there cards so they can charge you a fee, that hardly no other buisness charge you for when you use your CC.

I'm sure there's some, but not enough to worry about.
It's not as much the dirt as it is the water in the bottom of the tanks. Condensation occurs and the water vapors drain back to the tank. Water is heavier than gas so it sits at the bottom. When the tankers fill up, it mixes the gas and the water and the pumps will pick it up. Depending on the station you fill up, there may be very little or a shit load of water in the tanks. Maybe that's the reason I don't fill up at mom and pop's. Their quality may no be what I expect.

Most of what's stated in the OP is bull or at least greatly exaggerated. I once asked a tanker driver about filling up while the truck was there and SHE said not to worry about it. If it were an issue, many folks would be complaining about it. How would you know that the truck didn't leave 2 minutes before you got there? Plus, there isn't a petroleum facility that big in San Jose.

Lightbulb

The only reason I get gas in the morning is:

I'm headed home from work and I pass right by one.
I'm close to empty.
The station is usually empty.
