Default New Accessory - Garmin GPS

$191 on ebay, refurbished Garmin Quest 2 is in the mail. It retails for $699 at Cabelas.com

From what I've researched it should do all that I would need and more.

Don't need XM radio, or wireless bluetooth calling. Plus it lasts for 20hours on a charge and can fit into a shirt pocket.

The high end Zumo goes for around $600 on ebay, $900 retail and has a battery life of 6 hours unless you hardwire it. Maybe if I were a heavy adventure tourer, but I just want this tool to explore new backroads without pre-planning and printing up a map.

Now I just gotta figure out a way to mount it, preferably on the front half of the tank. I'm not particularly interested in a RAM mount as it would seem to grossly obscure the instruments.

Be careful with those suction cup mounts on the gas tank. I tried that when I first got the GPS, sucked to look down and see it sitting on my ram-air tubes. As you can see in my picture, the screen is not intrusive to the gauges. It's also on a swivel mount and can be positioned anywhere. Either way, nice looking toy you got there!

Mine is hard mounted to a lug under the triple clamp

I wouldn't trust suction mounts

Need pics when you mount it.

I have a Magellan Roadmate 2000 on the way. 12v outlet is wired up and just needs to be attached to the bike.

I need to get me one of these damn things, i think you can buy the mounts used for camera's on your gas cap cover bolts to mount a GPS, atleast thats what one of the descriptions on ebay sayed. so it would be in the same area as a overlooking guages camera would be... like right where your head would go in a full race tuck.

I learned the hardway about suction cups on the bike. I left the house with it quite secure, and about 20 miles down the road it comes off. $300 down the drain.

I upgraded to a better gps model, the Garmin Nuvi 780. I'm also looking for an awesome mount system for it, preferably something that goes around/in the triple tree.

You can do just about anything you want with a RAM mount - it doesn't have to block the instruments at all. I use a RAM mount on both my bikes, with an articulated arm consisting of 1 long and 1 short arm connected by a double-ball connector. I can position the cradle anywhere, and it doesn't obstruct the instruments in the least. It just position it so it sits just below the instrument cluster. It mounts to a ball mount on the clutch lever bracket.

wow that sucks. i occasionally use the gps (suction cup on the windshield). but i do have a strap that connects the mount to the left mirror. so if it comes off its still with the bike.

I wonder if the extended warranty I got would have covered if mine fell off? They said if anything happens to it.

I looked into that... and because I used the suction cup on a motorcycle it wouldn't.

I just purchased a ram mount system for the triple tree hole which will be here tuesday or wednesday. I'll let you guys know how it works.

Update:

I have ordered a basic handlebar mount off ebay for $21 shipped to use the quick release feature that it has. I have no section of bare handlebar with which to actually mount it so I'm still trying to work on a custom solution.

suzukichic01 - a ram mount for the triple tree hole? Can't find anything like that even on their website.

My idea is to custom fabricate a steel or sheet-metal plate that will mount under the steering head nut and extend to the right across the triple tree. Possibly with another hole cutout and a rubber grommet to go around the right fork tube to prevent it from rotating around the steering stem.

Then just mount the bottom half of the quick-release.

Any tips on getting this piece cut would be appreciated. - The real pain in the ass is going to be either making a bend so it rises out of the depression around the steering head bolt. I guess an easy solution would be to shim it up with 28mm washers and just have the nut sit high. (Theres a few threads left on top as it sits)

Give me a sec and I'll post it up
