Place your bets now! On January 30th, Mythbusters on Discovery channel will finally reveal the truth! Will the plane fly? Only you know the answer!
Original question: "A plane is standing on a runway that can move (some sort of band conveyer). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyer moves in the opposite direction. This conveyer has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in the opposite direction). Can the plane take off?"
This is where it gets fun. Click one of my "donate" links below, to contribute to the pool. Then send me a PM telling me whether to put you for the "plane flies" side, or the "plane doesn't fly" side. You can come up with any insane end result theory you like, but it will severely decrease the odds of winning if you put your money on the plane "turning in to Pamela Anderson".
After the Mythbusters show on the 30th of January, all the members who put money on the result that was correct will receive their share of the betting pool. Happy betting!
If you would like to donate a custom amount, simply go to the casino, click the "Transfer Cash to Another Player" link, and input your amount. All cash transferred to me will be assumed to be meant for this betting pool. Please make sure to send a PM with your result you are betting upon!!!!!
Names in the pool, with amount.-To be updated at least once daily. This is just to confirm your bet was received, if you would like to stay private or do not show up on here send me a PM.

There's no way a plane can gain lift without forward movement, and as you describe it the forward movement is nullified by said conveyor belt such that plane will never reach speed to take off. And exactly how are you calculating "speed"? relative to what?

The problem is, no matter how fast the conveyor goes, the plane is powered completely independently from the wheels. The conveyor could go the speed of light and the plane could go 5 mph, and the plane would still move forward at 5 mph.

The plane could be moving at a speed of, say for instance, 100mph. If the conveyor belt is moving in a counter direction at the speed of 100mph, the plane is still travelling forward relative to a still standing bystander.
The WHEELS on the plane would be travelling at 200mph...but because the plane's engine is independent of the wheels, the plane WILL gain speed and eventually take off.

The question is: which version of the problem is Mythbuster's testing? The original version where the conveyor and wheel speed match (in which case the plane will not take off) or the version where the conveyor and plane's ground speed match (in which case it will take off?)

I am an aviator for a living and after much debate and realization a few of us here at the squadron realized it will in fact take off. The only possible thing that can limit it from taking off is friction. With that said, if it is on a conveyor belt there is no friction on the wheels. Planes can sit on the runway with their brakes on at full thrust and go NOWHERE. So when there is no outside force such as brakes, then it will take off.

I am confused by the wording as well. I placed my bet under the impression that if I am standing next to the plane on solid ground, it does not move relative to me thanks to the conveyor. Is this what they will be testing?
