To do an accurate comparison, you need to look at countries that are somewhere even remotely near any of the US's economic stats.

England, $5.79
Germany, $5.57
Japan, $4.24

The one that I really don't get, though, is San Juan at $1.74. WTF?!?

Poor argument for foreign reliance. Let's say, for the sake of this argument, that all the Middle East's oil dries up unexpectedly in 5 years - say the estimates were wrong.

If we started exploration and drilling today, in 5-10 years we could be providing our own country with say, 40% of our own oil. How exactly is that a bad thing, even if it only lasts 30 years?

Even if we ran out completely (not likely) we only get 30% of our oil currently from the Middle East. Our reliance on Middle Eastern oil has declined steadily since the '70s.

If anything, *Canada* really has us by the balls.

I was saying that drilling our own oil to lower prices would be a bad option. Unless the gauging kills our economy don't touch

No, of course. Might as well just let it sit there. Much more sensible...

There's a cost for EVERYTHING. Yup, even waiting. It's called opportunity cost.

The costs associated with drilling is largely an ecological issue. Which of course, is tied closely to political agendas.
