I understand your point, and it's well taken, but you're leaving out a big part of the equation. The U.S. economy is, in a large part, built upon marijuana prohibition. This isn't so with the other vices you mentioned. You're talking about a radical change in domestic policy.
You think 9/11 affected the economy by changing expectations? The economy would take a hit, perhaps one it couldn't recover from, if such a radical policy change was made. I'm not speaking to the ethical or legal considerations of such a policy change; you can justify that to yourself whatever way you wish. People need stability in a consumer-based capitalist economy as complex as ours; radical changes in policy, even ones for the better, often create more problems than they intend to solve.
I have to disagree....yes, the people that work towards contiued prohibition would be out of a job, or perhaps transfered into something more meaningful? (fighting terrorism?) But the economy would NOT take a hit, infact, if done properly, the economy would prosper further than it already is! Imagine legal weed, at gas stations, bars, liqour stores, ect....All taxed! Imagine the new companies that develop medicinal uses for the drug, the fuel it would provide, and the forests that it would save! Because of prohibition, we know next to nothing of the full potential of this wonderful plant! If prohibition was repealed, we could maximize the plants potential and I think many good things would come of it, so many good things in fact that anything bad (as minute as it would be) would be out weighed in a fashion never imagined by prohibitionists!
Keep it up man it'll effect your memory and make yeah slow , but too each his own , I know because I used to do it alot in my early 20 's and I can't remember sh*t, and I know a few other guys who smoke regularly and they are about as intelligent as a bag of hair now , and lazy .....

People on drugs depending what type, are by and large poor workers. Absenteeism...mistakes...slow productivity. If everyone were stoned, no one would notice...except other countries...like Iran...NK...etc.
I used to smoke a lot. Don't much anymore since I'm in college and don't have the same friends. Still do when I go home though. I used to be what most people would call a pot-head, smoking a couple hours every single day of the week. I currently hold a 3.9 GPA in Electrical Engineering and can remember physics equations without even using them for a year.
There have been many studies lately that discredit all of the harmful effects of weed. The original study on weed was done back in the 70's, and has since been shown to be extremely biased and in general wrong. That's the one you hear quoted the most.
I don't do much of either these days, but I would much rather smoke than drink. Alcohol is much worse for your body and even bad for your mind. Plus, there's so many calories in alcohol and I'm an athlete. I would love for weed to be legalized, and I see that trend coming.

In my late teens and twenties I did everything but smack, was in a Metal band, all part of the lifestyle.
Personally, there are much better things to do with the years you have here on earth.
I smoked a lot in college, but after a while it got old and I just lost the desire to do it anymore. I'm not opposed to people that do it and will indulge on the rare occasion, but I guess I just moved on in my life to other things that are fun and don't result in me eating everything in the house.
People smoke weed for the same reasons they drink beer, except you never see someone grow "pot-muscles", or someone die of a weed overdose. People driving intoxicated on alcohol tend to swerve in and out, go too fast, and crash into things... People high on weed will see a stopsign and creep to a halt taking 30 seconds...
I've tried it like most people, but I don't consider myself a smoker by any means. I don't see any reason why it's illegal.
Actually, know of a 32 year old that died with a bong in his hands a few weeks ago.

Back in highschool some girls died in a car accident when they hit a tree. They were listening to music at the time.
(and they were also huffing WD40)
I'd like to see the first ever coroner report of a marijuana overdose. Did they do a bloodtest? Was an autopsy done? By the way, how many vehicular homicides have you heard about where alcohol was a contributing factor, and how many where marijuana was a contributing factor. (Just pulling vehicular homicides out of my ass because it makes sense that the majority of deaths would occur when someones operating a 2-3 ton missile)

Exactly. But you probably were led onto heroine and PCP as a result, right?
The U.S. Government spends roughly 12 million dollars yearly in the advertising of anti marijuana commercials, as well as the prosecution of marijuana related criminals.
If taxed as heavily as cigarettes the U.S. Government would make roughly 6 million dollars annually.
To further support my point (which if you haven't gotten by now, is for marijuana legalization) I refer you to this image:
Aspirin:
-When taken with alcohol, aspirin can cause stomach bleeding
-Nausea and vomiting
-People with hemophilia can die
-Reye Syndrome in children: fat begins to develop around the liver and other organs of the child, eventually putting severe pressure on the brain. Death is common within a few days
To accompany this, a common statement and fact. When used as directed, cigarettes kill. Marijuana does not.
Not only can marijuana be used as a recreational drug, it can be used as a pain relieve and relaxer for those suffering from Glaucoma or Chemotherapy. It can also be used as a hunger stimulant to AIDS and Cancer Patients.
