Do we all at least agree that a plane can't take off if it's not moving forward?? (and no, VTOL planes like a Harrier jet don't count)
so i finally read through SOME of the posts (not all) and realized i would have gotten it a LONG time ago if i just kept reading people's examples.
anyway, i just wanted to add that i dont agree with you on this statement. relative motion of the plane has nothing to do with whether it will take off or not. it all has to do with lift of the wings, created by air flow.
i bet a plane would create lift it there were 75 mph winds blowing directly at it. that is why they anchor planes down to the ground when they're not in use so they dont blow away....
just thought id be a smartass

I think this thread should live forever. It's a gleaming example of why technicians, in any field, get paid what the general public considers "too much" money. There's no trick to this question, it's not a "if a tree falls in the forest" question, yet it is still being debated like there is more than one answer...

If everybody knows how it's gonna end, why doesn't some one stop me?
The real question is, how much hypothetical weight has the plane lost after being on this hypothetical treadmill for the last two months?

also true. i've been flying a plane and just for giggles while up at alititude in 60 mph headwinds, got dirty (landing configuration) and was actually moving backwards at about 6 knots (ground speed) even though my ASI still read 50 KIAS. a plane doesn't HAVE to be moving forward to fly, it just has to have air moving over the wings fast enough.
