Default Florida man acussed of internet fraud with Katrina

WFTV.com - News - Florida Man Accused Of Fraud On Hurricane Internet Sites
"JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A judge issued an order Friday preventing a north Florida man from using the Internet to solicit funds he claimed would benefit Hurricane Katrina victims.

Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist accused Robert E. Moneyhan, also known as Demon Moon, of fraudulently soliciting donations on Web sites he created before the hurricane struck the Gulf Coast. Nassau County Circuit Judge Brian Davis issued a temporary injunction barring him from that activity.

Crist filed a deceptive trade practices lawsuit against Moneyhan in Nassau County and asked for at least $10,000 in civil penalties and restitution for any consumers injured by the sites. He asked Davis to freeze Moneyhan's assets and block him from any solicitation of donations via the Internet for two years.

"While difficult times bring out the best in most people, unfortunately they also bring out the worst in a few," Crist said.

Moneyhan, 51, said he meant no harm and only intended to secure domain names to keep others from profiting from them. He denied soliciting donations.

"As people were watching the storm, I knew that other people were going to be snatching up domain names and making a profit," Moneyhan told The Florida Times-Union.

But state investigators determined that the sites did not represent legitimate charities and would not benefit hurricane victims.

Crist said donations from the unregistered sites were to be directed to Moneyhan's PayPal account. PayPal is a popular Internet payment service.

Seriously.. I am going to start a chairty and have a overhead of 99% like most of them. 99% to me for administrative costs (My Salery) and 1% to the actual victims I claim to help. That's what most of the "Foundations" and "Charities" that celeberties start up look like if you look at their books. ok, more like 80% overhead 20% victims, but you get the point.

By law you have to give 2% to the cause. At least that's what it was some years back.

The IRS dictates who can and can't do this and I looked into it one day.You have to be very determend to screw somebody to do this, the paper work sucks that much.

I guess I won't do this, but damn what is wrong with the IRS when they allow a "Charity" to be able to allocate 98% of the funds donated and grants received from the government to spend them on "administrative costs"? What a great society we live in... Rich get richer, poor get poorer and soon the lines will divide and it's prolly not gonna be good...

I've tried to order things from the lower 48 and I've been told that they don't ship to other countries.

So far so good... that is really sad tho. When I was younger my best friend moved up there. I wonder how he is doing. He was a military brat. Daniel Cory. Wow, I can't beleive that I remember his name. That was 15 years ago.
