Someone at work made me an offer I couldn't refuse on an ex500...I have ridden it pretty much every day for a year straight now. I pack my khakis, shirt and work shoes in my backpack and strap it to the seat. People think I'm crazy being 36 and all but I don't give a damn and my wife gets a kick out of it...so I ride
Before I rode this bike I didn't have a clue of what it was like to ride by myself on some country twisty road. Ahhhhh yeah.

Do you know why dogs hang their heads outside of car windows? No you don't. Those of us w/ bikes completely do. There's the main reason. And if you can't get laid w/o a bike, maybe that's nature's way of saying one of you is plenty.
personally, i think college is a great time to have a bike. i wish i did when I was in undergrad. I am a grad student now and I still love having my bike. Plus, when I teach class, my students are always shocked that I ride.

It seems alot of you think I'm a "Candy-Ass Bitch".
I found a nice GS500 in blue for $2,200 that I might pick up, but I'm checking out the Yamaha dealership tomorrow to see what they have in stock. Yesterday I found a Yamaha R6 Limited Edition in blue, it was #736/1000 made. They wanted $6,200 for it. But I'm that might be a bit to much bike for a beginner rider.
But yea...I don't know what I was thinking when I made this thread
And about the whole 25+ pounds thing. I've never ridden a bike, so i don't know if weight on your back throws off your center of balance or some crap like that...just an observation.

if you pay 6200 for a limited edition r6 you're an idiot. get a ninja500 and be done w/ it.
Dude.......... you're getting a bike........ you're just freaked because it doesn't make sense and for the first time in your life you are trying to be responsible and logical. Good job, now go reward yourself. Good point (whoever made it) Get on a buddies (and don't wreck it!) Once you feel it.... H-O-O-K-E-D!! I started riding trials bikes when I was 8.
I put in hard years in college, medical school, post grad.... I cannot begin to imagine my life without the experiences I've had on top of so many different bikes. Lot's of mention of chicks.......... You have no idea how many times I've been laid as a direct result of giving off that "rebelious adrenalinized sport bike guy". Chicks/nurses/safe lil' grad coeds love bikes!
You will love to see corvettes and trans am JERKS pull away from stop lights slowly that you are sitting at! If they don't know.......... show 'em hehehehe. OWNED!!!
Biggest reason: When you're on a bike the right way, dialed in, thinking, watching, leaning, balancing, meshing, ripping. There is room for nothing else. It's a purity for me, no one else gets that time, I don't need music, cup-holders, kids, wives, ex's, what work, bills? who cares, I'm on my bike. This is true for your first ride, it will be for my last.

As someone already said, a bike is usually a want not a need (although it can turn into a need). Many have found ways to include a bike into a lifestyle you seem to have. Start with the MSF course. That will not only get you off on the right path for street riding, it will also help answer the question "Do I really want a bike?"
Remember that you are getting rather biased answers here on this site.
