O'Brien to succeed Leno at 'Tonight Show' in 2009

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- NBC's "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno will retire at the end of his current five-year contract in 2009 and be replaced by "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien, the network said Monday.

O'Brien signed a new contract Monday that guarantees he will assume the job as host of America's top-rated late night talk show, "The Tonight Show," sometime during the 2009 season. Leno took over the show from Johnny Carson in May 1992. By the time he steps down, he will have hosted the program for more than 17 years.

I never liked Leno anyway as far as his comedy. I wish I had his cars and bikes though.

I think he should replace him now, but that's just me. There was a thread about it earlier where another member put it pretty well: Leno has to try to be funny while Conan is just naturally funny. Of course Leno gets points for being just a huge car and bike nut.

Personally I think Leno is MUCH funnier than Conan. Leno has the timing down, Conan just acts like an idiot.

Conan is awesome, he'll make an excellent replacement for Leno. I'm sure he'll "grow up" a little bit and do less "bit comedy" once he takes over. Because The Tonight Show is just a more sophisticated show than Conan's show, but it's supposed to be that way. Congratulations Conan!

I think this is awesome news. It's about time NBC is going to give him a promotion. I've been watching Conan for years and have been surprised that he's stayed in his current time slot as long as he has.

You start out motorcycling with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

I love them both, so I am glad that Conan will be replacing him. Yes he acts like an idiot...but that is what makes him so funny!

That's cool...but wow it would suck to know you have to wait 5 years to step in! If I were him and had the money saved up, I'd take a 5 year vacation if my contract would allow it!
