Very lound hissing and slight popping, with bad smell
The bike, not me.
Pulled out of my lot this morning and came to my first stop sign and the bike was making a slight hissing noise with just a bit "Crackling".
Pulled away slowly to try and figure out what it was... when it suddenly got about 49043289580345894 times worse and started to emanate a bad smell like very strong exhaust fumes, and then stalled. I got off the bike and walked it back home (luckily 500 yards away).
When I got back, I started it quickly and it was still just as loud with same smell and only would stay on if I had the fast idle set to full. After about 8 seconds, I turned it off.
I haven't touched anything around the engine in the past year except the air intake boot (part of the airbox) and mixture screws.

did you check to make sure nothing took up residence in the bike itself?
Also, have you performed your spring maintence on it? Like draining/flushing your radiator, changing your oil, etc?
I would investigate your exhaust pipes and make sure nothing died in there over the winter time also.
may or may not help, but, it might help your bike

From how you describe it, sounds like liquid (gas, oil, radiator fluid, etc.) hitting a hot part (engine case, exhaust header, etc.) and then burning off causing the sound/smell. I'm guessing you have already checked around and looked for anything suspicious. Good luck.

If it was oil or coolant dripping on a the exhaust it would continue to make the sound even after the bike stalling or cutting it off.
A vacumm leak will cause a hissing sound. Depending on the size of the leak will determine how bad of a hiss sound it will make.
That is where I would start. There are several ways to find a vacumm leak. One way is to try to locate where the hissing sound is coming from. Another way is to start the bike and take some carb. cleaner and spray around all vacumm lines and the intake manifolds/boots(whichever your bike has) and if the idle changes while spraying a certain location that is where your leak is coming from.
As far as the smell goes im not sure if the vacumm leak will cause that but it is where I would start.
Hope this helps and let us know what you find or if you find nothing so we can brainstorm some more.

possibly a loose header gasket that finally went out after run it up to temp? causing the hissing. as for the smell...did you clean your bike and get some wax, armor-all on the exhaust pipe? hope it's an easy fix.
