FUCK!!!!! My laptop that I use for school and pretty much everything else's hard drive just bit the dust. Worst thing is the CD drive is fubared on it also, so even if I do get a new HD I am gonna have to get a new CD drive to actually be able to load the new OS and crap. Sooooo once I do order this stuff someone wanna help me install a new OS and stuff? I don't have any of that crap(XP and whatnot).

Not all that uncommon really. I support some of the largest computer networks on the planet and I can't tell you the first thing about Win-blows or how to fix a PC.
Does it even try to boot? What exactly are the symptoms that make you think both are crapped out?

recovery discs are worthless. you're better off erasing everything on it so you can have a blank CD when you need one.
+1 on both of these. i don't use external storage but partition my HD for my various files.

What outta that made you think I can't do it myself. I don't have the software, and don't feel like spending 100s of $ trying to fix a laptop that isn't really worth it. Its karens old laptop from Carolina thats and old P3 800mhz laptop. I know that aaron has access to all of that. It would take me all of 2 mins to swap that stuff.

Yeah its kinda funny that people associate IT with PC trouble shooting. They don't realize that programmers don't touch hardware nor anything windows.
What gives me the idea my HD is fried is it clicks and makes noise and says HD is not connected when I know it is. The CD drive has been busted for a long time. It won't read and discs.

Remove and reseat the HD. Alot of times a laptop is moved around so much that it can kind of unseat itself. Try this first. And Recovery discs are crap, especially when the CD drives doesnt work in the first place.

sounds like toast... But, i have a convertor you can use to plug the laptop drive into a standerd ide cable. then booting off of the host computer might allow you to access the data from the laptop drive. I can do this for you if you want. I've been working with computer hardware since we had to align the read/write heads on a disk platters with an oscilloscope.

ebay the cd drive, should be able to find one for 30 bucks, hd, i may have but i'm not sure if it works, but then again i would try getting a new one from tigerdirect or newegg. i partition everything so u can save your data. i need to invest in a external drive as well since i only have 150gb space on my raptor and have limited expandibility in my thermaltake lanbox.
