ahhhh, the NEW kawi 500

so i got some time, and took pix, both with the exhaust on and off.

right now im trying to figure a way to get the open exhaust sound, without killing my power/engine....
then its going to be brakes

dunno about the suspention anymore, i think that moneys going into savings for an SV1000 ^_^

other then the exhaust/brakes, not sure what else ill do to the bike....

btw, i lost ANOTHER e-pass transponder (i dunno if they have them everywhere, but its a lil thing that pays tolls so you dont have to slow down on the highway)
seems i cant find a place for this thing
the first one fell off after a wheelie (couldent find the thing)
and after turning mybike into a street fighter, i tryed keeping it in my back pack, but it only worked half the time!
i had it on the tank for about 4 days, and after 1 lil spirt of about 110mph for about 1min i look down, and the things GONE!

argh.......


well heres pics with the exhaust on, and off, tell me what you think.

ive put arrows to show my frount turnsignals becase there hard to notice, unless you know what they look like.


give the bike a WAY better look, and cleans everything up!

Isn't that something you can tune with a jet kit or something like that? With the exhaust off you've got no backpressure in your exhaust system, so I imagine it's just really screwing up your fuel/air ratio.

By the way, the bike looks great but I think you should lose that bottom fairing.

well my gas mileage for a ex500 is 30ish, on average, ive never really seen over that, or under, becase i stay on the throttle pretty good.

in order to run open exhaust, im sure my MPG would be cut in HALF
ill prob do it when i turn this bike into a stunt bike, but not now

as for the bottom fairing, i had it off for a while, but dident really like the look, ill post an older pic with it off.

well yesterday i got done with my new "shorty" exhast

when i say "new' i mean. i cut the hell out of my exhaust ot make it look/sound better

took 5x's the work i thought it was, but it was a good learning experence!

sorry about the wait guys.


yesterday i left my lights on, and killed the bikes battery so i had to pull it out and put it on the charger.....

then i fought with the gf.....well .........ex......all night


BUT, i just went out took pix, tell me what you think. i took all different close up views so you can see that it looks pretty good from far, but its kinda scrached up.

you can see the "before" pix, all in this thread to compare the old to new looking exhaust


no video right now, its very windy outside, so ill try too get a video tommarow

i sound all stuffed up on my cam, and the exhaust doesent sound as good as it does in person, but with it in the garadge, and with the door closed, you get pretty close to what it sounds like

Sounds good. Did you cap off all the emissions stuff? I noticed you didn't have any of the typical aftermarket popping.

bastically i drilled out the rivits, pulled the endcap/screen out

cut 4 inchs off the pipe

pulled some extra baffle out.

cut the screen to size


then drilled about 4-5holes at the end of the screen (where the pipe had no baffle) to make it louder/deeper


it pops when engine braking

but id say the bike is running a lil rich, just a lil bit.
nothing real bad i dont think.



btw, the bike acted ALOT better after taking out the k&n and putting the stock filter back in
i think i even got some MPG back

The popping on deceleration is caused by the ignition of unburned fuel on the way out of the exhaust. The emissions system purposely injects air into the exhaust system to make this happen. There is so much baffling in the stock cans that you never hear it, but with aftermarket cans it sounds like loud popping. It isn't hurting anything, but you can stop it by plugging up all this emissions stuff. It really serves no purpose other than trying to reduce the amount of unbunred fuel exiting through the cans. Some people don't like the popping others don't care. With my sarachu's you can hear it any time you chop the throttle whether you are moving or not. I noticed yours wasn't popping when you were revving it up. Mine pops a lot. I kind of like it. It makes the bike sound real rowdy.

when i ran the bike with open exhaust
holy crap, ive only heard true open pipe v-twins pop that loud

you should pull thouse sarachus off, and ride it with the pipes open

even if its just for a couple miles....


puts a huge smile on your face.

thats the reson i wanna get rid of the bike, every time you lean over the bike acts NUTS, even with aftermarket tires, it acts like crap
its ether the suspention or its the fact that its only got that tiny 130 size rear tire, when our leaned over theres barley nothing on the road!

Im wanting to trade up this summer...I like my bike, I just want something with a bigger motor and something that is actually a BIGGER bike! Im a big guy, way too big to be riding this little 500...it was a great bike for me to have as my first sportbike, but Im ready to move up to a 600 or 650 at least...guy in my building just bought an '02 F4i a couple days ago...awesome lookin bike...makes me want to trade up real bad! I want to try to make $500 on this ninja cuz I got it real cheap...then get to trade up in size and down a few years and get something a little older and bigger...but I do like the 500, im just too big for it
