I don't think that it really matters as long as you're confident that you can handle slick roads.
Sometimes you can't predict weather and you could be at a store when a storm hits and you have to ride back.
If I ever get stuck where it's raining on my bike, I'll wait at least 5-10 minutes to make sure the oil and such is washed from the road and to see if it's slowing down at all. If it doesn't let up, I'll just take a trip around the parking lot to get used to the change in handling/breaking, and go on with my day
BTW: This is all theoretical as I've never had to ride in the rain being as I live in a desert

The only time I rode when the roads were wet was the first time I crashed, and the only time I/the bike got hurt. Make sure you are confident turning, starting, and stopping with the current pavement conditions. And if you are riding on the stock 250 tires (pre-'08 bikes, anyway), do yourself a favor and replace them with something better. They aren't well suited for rain.

Take it easy and you will be OK. Makes you a better rider also IMO.

Wait for a day when you are not in a rush and it starts raining and just tool around to get a feel for it. I have only done it once and it was sprinkling all night so light rain and wet roads 23 miles. Just keep as upright as possible.

because they are super real sportbike riders who check the weather and plan every trip on their bike it could never rain.
I've ridden in the rain plenty of times, even when I did not have my bike very long and it's a 600.

I actually enjoy riding in the rain... as long as it's not on the way TO work.

My rule was always taking the car if there was more than a 20-30% chance of rain. Hated even going through puddles the day after a good rain. Figured it just worth the extra risk. Then on a trip I made with my brother, it rained about 1/3 of the 1000 miles trip. No issues as it was all highway riding (80-85 mph), and we even hit some MAJOR thunderstorms. The rain was coming down so hard it was stinging my arms even though I was wearing my armored mesh jacket and rain gear over it. I feel a lot better about riding in the rain now.

Take it easy and be smooooooth and you'll be fine. Practice a few times before you commute in it, if you so choose. A few months ago I rode through Monarch Pass in Colorado with a full load of gear and it stormed on me with nickel to quarter sized hail. There were rocks tumbling down the cliffs, so I took my chances and road down. It really isn't that bad once you get the hang of it.

There's nothing difficult about it.
I didn't vote because I feel even if you aren't confident riding in the rain you still need to do it. Unless your one of those people who only rides when it's 70 degrees out and sunny.

How can you never have ridden in the rain? I have gone out on days when the weather man/woman said no chance of rain and ended up riding in a downpour(dont trust the weather). Riding in the rain can only improve your skills.

Well once my bike is fixed I hope to be riding in all weather. Especially because my car is crap...
