I just sold a Ninja 250. It was a great little bike. I'm 5'10" and 160 lb. It fit me fine and would easily do 90 mph on the highway. I would look for an older one. They made esentially the same bike from 1985 to 2007. Sure the newer ones look cooler, but you're probably not going to keep that bike so: Go cheap, learn to ride, have some fun, then sell it and move on. I wouldn't worry about miles, except as a way to beat up the curent owner on price. These things are pretty reliable.
Here's something to think about. The Ninja 250, like the SV-650, is a good dipshit-o-meter. Everyone who knows anything about bikes knows they are great bikes and fun as hell. If someone gives you a hard time about it you immediately know he's a dipshit.
For gear, there's a website that used to be called "newenough.com." They sold last year's gear at huge discounts. I'm not sure what the new name is, but you need to get on their mailing list.

I like to start asking people who think they know anything about the 250 what it's stats are...
how much does it weigh? seat height? (while it's smaller than the average 500/650/6000 it's not THAT much smaller)
How much horse power does it put out?
Oh yeah and how fast does it get from 0-60 again?
Most of the time they literally have NO idea. They rag on it simple because 250 is smaller than 600. It's so stupid. oh well.
Glad you are making good choices!! just keep scouring the interzwebz- you'll find something!

Hey I just wanted to take the time to say thanks to everyone here, its great for a newbie to have a place to go an ask questions, and the info on this site (threads etc) is amazing.
If it wasn't for reading the begginer bike section I probably would've followed the advice of a dealer and got the gsxr and either cost myself a lot of money, or hurt myself bad, possibly worse.
And all the talk makes me even more excited to ride, its winter here now, but im thinking when theres snow its a good time to buy a bike on the cheap. Thanks again fellas, and soon as I get one I'll post pics, she might not be pretty tho! Haha

If you're looking to save money, try craigslist.org
It's kind of a hassle but you may find a great deal if someone in your area just happenes to want to get rid of something you want. be careful of scams.
for 2.5g, I bet you will even find a 2011 ninja 250. they look pretty damn sexy and most people sell it because they're ready to move on to a bigger bike and hardly any damage.
Consider spending bigger for gear since you will always have them as long as you ride and they will keep you riding for the long run.
Safe ride!!!

Yep. Check the "used by dealer" section on CL for some great deals - we just bought a "returned" 2012 Ninja 250R, the red/black "SE" model, for $3k tax included, last month. Under 300 miles, no wear at all. Previous owner bought and decided riding wasn't for him! As this is not riding season, if you have CASH, dealers will make all sorts of deals to move bikes off of the floor and into your garage.
FYI, I just did a search of CL in my area and found several 2009-2011 250r models for under $2500!

Yeah, prices here in WI are high too for the 08+ 250's. They go for around 3500-3900 here. But you can still find pre '08 250's and 500's for under 2,500. For some reason, the 500's are all selling for about the same as the 250's around me.
Recently bought a nice, leather riding jacket from Motorcycle Jackets & Biker Helmets Clothing Store - Leather Boots, Chaps & Motorcycle Gear from their close-out section for $120. Not my 1st choice of looks, but the craftsman ship seems solid and the leather is both heavy and supple (came with full CE approved armor to boot). They've got some good prices.
CBR250RR? Vaguely heard of it. 4 cylinder 250 right? Seemed like a race bike or a fun project/show bike. Nothing you'd buy to ride on a regular basis I'd imagine.

EDIT: Also, don't forget about Motorcycles - Scooters, Dirt Bikes, Choppers, Sport Bikes, and Other Motorcycles for Sale - Cycle Trader.com . If nothing else it'll clue you in to some dealers close to you.

Sounds like I need to buy a bunch of '12 250's and take them up there... Make 2-3 Gs profit EACH!
