Best idea you had . If you can learn to ride one of em old pasta framed and wood braked beastys well .. When you do step on a sportsbike you will make the thing dance the tango .

Quick update!

Ended up taking the MSF BRC [was about 16-20hours] and passed everything! Was a very informing course and very helpful!!! I highly recommend it to ANY new rider!!!

Also in the process picked up a beat up 2000 Honda CBR 600 F4. Payed only $900 and it came with a front stand. Needed a chain, had a slight oil leak, and the right side fairing was not the same color as the rest of the bike. So far I put a new chain on it [$60], put a new clutch cover on it [$50], oil change [$50]. Also plasti-dipped the whole bike black. Last thing it needs is the seat re covered [cracks]. It is a great starter bike IMO. Not scary fast, but plenty of enough power. Has new tires and handles awesome!
