I didn't mean to come accross so rash. I really think a good looking bike, that makes a good starter bike, and is very comfortable for a new rider is the GS500 from Suzuki.

I chose the FZ6 as my beginner bike and I am glad I did. It is a great bike, a bit heavy for a smaller rider, and really sticks to the pavement great during corners and accelerating. One thing I have to say to a new person is Throttle Control. Extremely important on the FZ6 cause this inline-4 will run hard with or without you in the saddle. I'm glad I have 10+ years experience on the road tho cause it gave me a chance to fine tune those critical life saving skills on this somewhat tricky bike. I give it a Best Bang for the Buck.

"forgot to metion a gsx-600 what about that one?"

Nah that ones no better than an R6. Just drive out here to Missouri and pick up my EX500 for $1500.

Now that you've heard from all the guys that were safe and started on true starter bikes, listen to someone who did start on a modern SS, a gixxer 6. IT'S NOT A GOOD IDEA! I belive I would be 3x a better rider if I had started on a smaller bike. Also I probley wouldn't have had my first accident if I had started small. Listen to these guys, they are smart and have alot of experiance. I wish I had friends like them before I got my first bike, but I had the friends who egged me on to get a "real" bike. Remember you don't start small, you start SMART.

Now who thought I was gonna say; don't be a wuss get the R6!.

Wow what a great couple of posts by firefighter and racer x. I could not have said it better my self.

What was said about the smaller bikes is so true I have a 600 and there if very few times I can ride the bike to it's full capability. With a smaller bike you can control it so much better. They are so much easer to learn on and trust me it does make a difference.

I think of it this way. You would not go out and get drafted to play in the NFL out of high school? you develope your skills and then hit the major leagues.

I did my Direct Access Licence(5 days of solid ridding) about 3 months ago with another guy here in London(met him on the course), admitably, I have ridden a 50cc from about 10-24(28 now, so had some road sense) and this other guy was a relative newbie to biking bar a couple of runs in an open field. Well he was a pretty good rider and we were about par on ending the course. I went for a FZ6(faired, mostly because of insurance constraints) and he went for for the CBR 600RR. Well lets put it this way..i am still ridding and so is he...difference is im still on the Fazer and he is now on a cheapo scooter! Really feel for him cause if he had gone for a more sensible first bike, would be still loving it..and to be honest..the best thing about biking is getting good on what you on and then looking for the next level..you miss half the fun jumping up the lader on the way up to the big bikes..

oh...he won't be getting another bike too soon. Putting a written off CBR 600RR on your insurance quotes does wonders for the decimal system!!(so he has 3yrs to let it clear before he can even think of another SB) most of his quotes exceeded the cost of brand new bike!! so very scary!!

At 17 years old, you really should not be riding in traffic. Your first hurdle will your parents. Only because you can't own a bike or car yet (need to be 18 for that). From there, your second hurdle will be insurance. Even on the 500s, it can be fairly brutal for a young rider.

If you want a bike and you are allowed to get one, get a Ninja 250. If you are focusing on looks as a primary driver for wanting to ride, take a seat and don't bother. It is the worst reason in the world for wanting to ride because it means you care more about appearances than riding. Inexperience in a car simply scares you and you have the cage around you to protect you when you really screw up. On a bike, inexperience can hurt or kill you.

Seriously, spend a year or two in traffic first. Then get a used Ninja 250 to learn on. Take my word for it, the 250 can handle anything you throw at it. Take the MSF first, then drop $1000 or so on gear and whatever you have left over covers insurance and a bike. The cost of riding begins with the bike. It doesn't end there.

Nothing wrong with wanting a nice looking bike but to repeat what another said, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". For second and beyond bikes, aesthetics can play a bigger part because you have experience to draw upon and more options to choose from. For a first bike, your focus should be on riding first. It is your first bike, not your last. You have years and years ahead of you to explore riding and all that it offers. The first bike is to learn valuable riding skills and gain experience so you will be around to explore those 2nd, 3rd, 4th and so on machines.

What are your other reasons for riding?

In my opinion, unless you grew up on the pegs of a dirt bike or you have been a road racing "rookie" since you were 12 years old (in other words, you have a last name of Hayden or Hopkins), a 17 year old has no business being on a 600 supersport of any stripe or era on the street.

600cc sportbikes are not weak. Not weak in the sense they are more comparable to F1 race cars in terms of overall performance than any car you'll find on the street. They are racing machines with street hardware bolted on and they are not engineered for new riders. Period.

The best decision you can make is to start small. A Ninja 250 or one of the 500s will be able to get you in plenty of trouble. The difference on those bikes is you have to go looking for it. On a supersport, trouble is usually not far off your rear wheel and it will happily catch up given half-a-chance. Riding experience is what puts a gap between you and trouble and keep it away from you. Without experience to draw upon, supersports magnify new rider mistakes quickly and often faster than you will be able to react. Do the wrong thing on a Ninja 250 and it will go "Hey, now! Stop that or else!". On a 600cc sport machine, it will simply go "Ok, here you go!".

I've been there and made the mistakes on the 250. Mistakes that would have killed me on my 600 and I still screw up on the 600. I've got 11,000 miles under me (7000 of those on a Ninja 250) so I am not the most experienced rider out there but I've gotten through the first learning phase with my skin intact. Now I'm into the second learning phase where I can really begin to learn how to ride properly. Consider doing the same.

realistically, you should get a used bike, as cheap as possibl, even ratty. just learn to ride. then a yr or so later, or if you can afford the ins , move up....

don't worry all the bikes you love know will be there 2-3yrs from now....

i think insurance is gonna kick you in the nutz

oh ya i just want to ride its so fun just goin out and riding i live in nc and to the beach it is like 4 hours i just want to ride to the beach one day stay the night and ride back. i really dont want to race, really dont want to do tricks. i just want a nice looking bike to go riding on. i have 4 friends who have bikes and there first bikes were r6s they have them now ( 2 of them do anyways.) they keep tellin me to get the r6 but when i read on the forums about what u guys say (older riders) makes me thnk damn what do i need to do. but if i can get some links for more plastic to make my that gs500 look better thats what ill get. if i cant find any links i may end up gettin it anyways. insurance will be like 125 a mth or maybe a lil more. but i make about 150 a week so i can afford to pay that. my parents pay for my truck. i can pay for the bike at the end of the year. i will have 3000. i know yall thinkin how the f*** is he goin to get a 2004 rg with 3000. well my moms bf has lots of friends and one happens to own a few yamaha shops and he said he can get a used one with pretty much low miles for 3500 and my mom will spot me that and ill pay her off. well g2g go do some damn spanish homework. high school blows c ya
