Default How much should I expect to spend?

Assume I want to buy a 2010 Ninja 250r and already have a full set of gear. I am a 17 year old kid. I can't afford to pay for the bike in full but can definitely afford to make monthly payments. Factoring in insurance, monthly repair costs, monthly payment etc, how much can I expect to have to spend monthly on this motorcycle? Round it up just to be sure. Assume I will be putting 500 miles a month on the bike if that information is necessary.

I am aware of my other options. I know it will be much cheaper to buy a used bike and it is probably smarter! I'm not entirely sure what I want to do yet, I would just like an estimate on how much it'll cost me.

Thanks in advance for your help!

not going to try to talk you out of new, however i suggest you go and price out the cost of plastics, and also consider if you're going to be upset if you drop your brand new bike, because if you think you will be.....

there is a reason they suggest buying a first bike that you can ride into the ground.

You don't have like 2 g's for an 08?

Bike pmt = $200 for 36 mos
Ins... $600 liability + 500 comp + 500 coll = $1,600/yr or ~$150/mo (need full if u financing)
Maint... max $200/yr ~ $20/mo
Gas $50/mo
------------
GRAND TOTAL = ~$500/mo

Insurance is what really f's you over in NY. That's IF they will insure you, probably not. You have to go on your parents' insurance - will they let you?

Better idea: borrow 2 g's from family, buy the bike, pay them back $100/mo plus bday/holiday money whatever you can scrounge up and you'll own it full in a year. With that, you also don't need to get full coverage, it'll save you a bunch on insurance.

Good luck.

Actually Kawi doesn't require full coverage on their bikes, however, for a new bike why wouldn't you want full coverage?

Are your parents willing to buy the bike for you? In most States at your age, you can not legally enter into to legally binding contract. Even if you could, no one will finance the bike for you, again the legally binding contract thing, no established credit and likely can't meet the income requirements.

Buying used and paying cash, the title can't be signed over to you so it would have to be one or both of your parents. Save your money and buy something used when you turn 18 unless your parents are willing to finance or buy it outright for you.

I have yet to see an 08+ for less than $2800.

OP: Buy a used older model! I bought my 2000 250 for $1100, sold it for $1050. Who the hell cares what it looks like? (Only reason to get the new version. New version is heavier+slightly slower anyways). It's your first bike. Don't spend a ton of money, save it for your next one.

yeah that is called the credit card program where people really screw themselves over by buying that, and you are a complete idiot if you dont have insurance.

We're reading your post, but not lining up to help you screw yourself.

Maybe listen?

Around NY I have seen them for $2,300 with some cosmetic damage, which you can then bargain down.

Here's one for $2,500

2009 kawasaki ninja $2500

Everybody thinks that 08+ are expensive because they see them listed on CL for 3k-4k. As someone who has been tracking prices on them for 6 months, I can tell you that they DO NOT trade in that range. Right now most sell for $2,500 and not more.

Those needing to sell list them at that price. The inexperienced who buy new and want to upgrade in 6 months have to pay off the loan, so they list it at 4k. Then they ride the market down over the next few months until they either pull it or they accept a low-ball.
