New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
Hi i have been reading some of the stickies that really strongly suggest starting a a 250. I find them more like tinker toys and would have a hard time buying one. I have been riding bikes since i was 8. When i got my first dirtbike . I no longer ride dirtbikes but a vulcan 750 which i have been riding for 2 years and maybe 4000 miles. i also own a fast car and am into snowmobiling a lot. I have driven some very fast cars and sleds and never felt i couldnt handle them. This being said i want a sportbike. I was think a 600 but i have found a pretty good deal on an R1 and would also enjoy the torque, less shifting around town and not as whiny sound on the highway. However i am aware that these are very fast and hard to handle and am still leaning towards a 600. I am curious given my situation do recommend getting a 600 or a 1000 or are do you think i still need to get a 250 or 500? also budget is 5000 firm if you want to throw me a suggestion that would be appreciated. Thank you

binx- why do you say this? i find it not very fun and kinda boring, my car is faster than it, and it doesnt have a HD cool factor to make up for that
rockscaler- 2000 R1 also looking at 04 or 03 R6s or CBR RRs

the impression i am getting here you are wanting it for the reason of speed which at your age is a bad idea. have you looked at what insurance will be for someone your age on an SS?

yes i understand insurance is going to be a lot. also no argument i love to go fast, heres the part i am going to be criticized for i think i can handle the power. I ride fast stuff all the time and have never gotten hurt. While i agree this alone is not enough to justify buying a SS given that i have spent a fair amount of time on road bikes i think getting a 600 or 1000 would be reasonable. I also have a yamaha XT 350 and cannot imagine ridding anything with a smaller engine. I find both the 350 xt and vulcan 750 to be mind numbingly boring and would rather drive my car most of the time, i want to change that so i want to ride the bike and take the car when i have too. I think a SS is the only kind of bike that could do that for me, except may a 650 twin naked bike or something like that but i dont know....
answer straight, Do you want to be a skilled , fast and competent rider or do you want to be a at best so-so rider with bragging rights of owning a fast bike, which you dont have near the skill to use except maybe in a straight line?

now i know you guys know a lot more about this than i do BUT i cant get my head around this whole you cant learn to ride well on a 600, i mean i know how to ride already are you saying i cant progress on a 600 with out taking the step all the way down to a 250? Thats got to be slower than the bike i am riding now.... i just cant get that through my head
you can learn but it will take you 5+ years (50k or so depending of focus) to reach the same skill level on a RR that you would gain riding some 10k mi or so (depending on focus) on a sporty/standard bike
I have a Vulcan 750, I lead and leave behind beginner and mediocre sportbike riders through twisties on it. Skill is the greatest tool.
A 250 is not neccessary but a late model 600 racer is not a good idea if you want to excel.
Do you want to look good or be good

once again i would not recommend it for you, you need to "grow up" and it is not to be a mean way when i say it. you are going after the bike for one of the worst reasons, because its fast. with your experience on the vulcan i would say knock yourself out, but the fact is: you are too immature and are looking for something fast.

i would think almost everyone buys them cause they are fast though.... also i can work the vulcan through the twisties but i have the problem of the pegs scraping the ground, which tells me i need something new. Anyways thank you for your opinions and fast replies, b/c of this i will consider a SV 650 or something like more seriously

i dont doubt your skill level for the bike, i just doubt your maturity level for it. a SV 650 is a great choice, and if you ever want to take it to Brainerd it would be perfect.
