New Rider ForumsJust joining the motorcyclist hobbie? Looking to get some information about a first bike? Or have some newbie questions. Are you new to the website?
My names Brokk I reside in Las Vegas and i am a full time student at UNLV.
My first car was a 1970 mustang 302 and was handed down to me from my grandfather. It was in horrid condition and needed ALOT of work. A friend of mine from summit racing helped me replace alot of problems with the car and while being shipped off to mustang depot for the wire harness replacement (heres a picture of it being towed ) .
Once it arrived, they told me that the wire harness was shotty and i needed to buy a new one in which they said are rare or couldnt be found which i couldnt find one at the time, but i was a noob also. Anyways, i took the car back and, unfortunately, let rot at my grandparents house for about a year. My grandpa ( a mechanic of 47 years ) and also forgot everything he knows, started the car after not being started for a year and chewed my starter and flywheel and that is when i decided it was time to give somebody else a chance. Anyways i sold it for 1000 dollars and the person who bought it did a very nice job on it. It is now roaming the streets all black.
I then drove a hyundai xg350l for the time i did not have a car, and shortly after bought a used 350z in which i was introduced to modding and mechanics. (pic)
Anyways, I am now interested in having a bike to go to school and back and just to run errands in which i dont have use so much gas. The bike can also take the same amount of people as the Z! I was recommended a mid cc bike like a 600 because i am 5' 9'' and 167 lbs.
Anyways, everyone has said "I wish i would have known that before!" and i would like to somewhat get comfortable with every aspect of the bike before i make a mistake. So here are a few questions i want to ask anyone who is knowledgable in the field and willing to help a noob out.
What are the underground brands which are good but cheaper and of course look nice.
I love the look of Dainese for the jackets, Shoei helmets are all i really know, any underground bikes that i should look into?
Any suggestions on anything will be appreciated?
Be aware that I am not rushing anything and I am learning the proper ways because i know how drivers are (Vegas), and i know how dangerous bikes can be. I would rather be prepared on as many aspects as i can before getting on the bike.
If you want to save money, buy a 250cc or smaller. you'll do slightly better than car, but not really significant.
Your not going to save any money buying car and then buying a bike, pluss gear and all the parts and tire repair ect, which is much more freequent on a bike than a car.

not at all, did you read what he said? He just gave his background with working on stuff and learning things. He wants to learn what to do and be helped in the right direction. he didn't say anything about racing or going fast. By the looks of it he just wants to learn how to ride and slowly get into it.
The implications are there. The cars he mentioned and the I'm x'xx" and weigh xxx# so I need at least a 600...blah blah blah. Oh yeah, look at his profile under Sportbike. Classic signs.
OP: Read the stickies. There is plenty of information at your fingertips, very good information. Seems we go over this 8-10 times a year or more.

I go Beltway blitzin' on my mad mofo musclebike WFO. Its a true choice, a god-like experience if you will. The thought that I could buy the farm in a spectacular fireball...................well, that gives me a stiffie! Tesco Vee/The Meatmen

Sorry but I concur. When I started reading this thread I was like "What the hell!! What is up with all the car rebuilding and car photos?" It became evident very quickly. "I have driven 500 HP cars so I can handle a bike" is evident and yes, I know he didn't actually say it but it's implied. Currently looking for a ZX6R says it all. Although these threads are more Spring/Summer threads but then, he is in Vegas.
Flame me for I know you will but buy whatever will make you happy. When I started riding there were no forums or internet really, you bought what looked good. Some survived, some didn't and many got hurt but then, so what? Government doesn't care, dealers don't care and sales people don't care or they would at the very least only sell if you have a class M but they don't.
We don't have a graduated riding system like other parts of the world so who am I to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't buy? And frankly, I'm sick and tired of arguing and being called names for trying to instill some sense into a stranger. Gear up, start slow, don't get cocky and you might be fine.

I would do better but i will still get better mileage than 17 to the gallon on a midsized bike so im not really worried about that, nor am i worried about the repairs haha. I'm not worried about the 300 dollar set of tires for the bike or anything but thanks for the suggestions!

My intentions were not to categorize fast bikes with fast cars, and if i did i apologize. Enjoy your popcorn though.

Thank you for not over analyzing what I said. I was raised around a family of mechanics and its what i am passionate about.

Im not only basing my weight and my height on getting a 600. I dont know why you had to go under my profile to find information to flame me on haha. As for the information i know i should have searched before asking haha. Was in a rush yesterday afternoon.

Nobody mentioned driving a 500 horsepower car. Please tell me what i can handle and what i can not. I dont know why i bother giving any details of my past cars thinking some of you will actually enjoy the pictures or give me insight when 1/10 of you do. Flame me if it helps you sleep at night.
As for the non bias comment. Thank you for the help.

BTW...brand new wiring harnesses are easy as hell to find.
You got taken.
Fail.
Really? I thought my car needed more work than that... Like Binx said time is more of an essence when you were blessed with less of it. The real fail is YOU trying to tell ME whats wrong with my car.

here are a couple things to consider when buying a FIRST bike;
1) just because you're a lard-ass, doesn't mean you need a liter bike or something big. just because you're tiny, doesn't necessarily mean you need a 250 and just because you're height/weight is somewhere in the middle, doesn't mean you should start off on a middleweight bike. the size of the bike should be determined by your ability and experience with street bikes. period. less skill = less cc.
2) don't try to convince anyone here that you'll "respect" the power because you don't want to get tired of the 250 in 6 months. if you really just want to get the 600 because it looks SWEET, tell us. we might not agree with your logic, but we can certainly see where you're coming from.
3) driving a 100hp car is most certainly what qualified me for purchasing a 100hp bike. not! the reality is, driving a car doesn't have much at all to do with riding a bike. you have to obey the same traffic laws and that's where the similarity ends.
disclaimer; i did not say that any of this was said (or thought) by you. just know that we've heard ALL the stories before on this site. all of the "my friends said" and even the "my local dealer rep told me..." stories. they are quite entertaining. don't be one of them. they usually end with a thread that says something like, "i looped my brand new bike. where do i find parts?"
if you're just tooling around town, get a 250. you'll be glad you did. if your only goal is to look cool around your friends, get the 1000. you'll never really learn how to ride it properly, but the girls will virtually throw their panties at you as you ride by...
