The Beginner Motorcycle Master List!

This is a complete list of all popular motorcycles made between 2009 and 1989, a 20 year span. Well...not a complete list. It is not a perfect, but for the most part is a very extensive one made by me. It is only 20 years in span for a few reasons. The first reason is that a all time list would have taken much too long to complete. The second is that a beginner bike should perferrably not be too old. If you buy a older motorcycle be prepared to do more time tooling around on it trying to fix it rather than learning to ride. As a beginner you should focus on your riding technique rather than mechanical skills if you truly want to learn how to ride.

This list is composed of three types of motorcycles, differentiated by color. The colors represent the beginner friendly aspects of a motorcycle...Green, Yellow, Red. This list was made to enable users and aspiring motorcyclists to easily search and examine a specific motorcycle that is listed in order to gain better insight from motorcycling community (here on SBN) pertaining to the beginner friendly aspects of the listed motorcycles.

If you wish to inquire about a specific motorcycle and its color please reply and either someone else or I will give you an answer. There are various reasons why some motorcycles are different colors. Some may have more power or weight than others, causing them to be a different color. Please do not try to argue to me or any other members in this thread about motorcycles that "obviously" fall under a certian category/color. For example, If you are trying to argue how a 600ss or 1000cc motorcycle doesnt belong in the "red" color then please go somewhere else. Everyone on SBN (me included) are not interested in hearing your story or your friends story about how he did great on one of these. We are here offering our advice for newbies who truly want to learn.

I myself went through KBB motorcycles to make this entire list. Some of the motorcycles on this list were only taken from the years 2009, 2004, 1999, 1994, 1989 due to their extensive amount. If there is a motorcycle that is not on this list please let me know and I will add it. Some of the lists are 100% Complete. Please also remember that some motorcycles were not added because they were too small. Also remember that some motorcycles are not all street legal and it is up to you to do the research regarding your state's specific laws regarding street legal motorcycles. Some motorcycles will also fall under categories that may or may not be completely true, this was NOT my fault. It was the fault of KBB classifying them in a wrong way and I did my best to try and correct them in most cases. Example, A motorcycle classified as sport touring but placed as cruiser. If you find any let me know and I will do my best to switch them. In the interest of time I am going to leave standard and cruiser in the same category for now.

*If you would like to use this list somewhere else please give me and the other members of SBN who contributed to this list full credit.

How about another color for ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE CHOICE? GSXR 1000, R1, ZX-10, 998, Speed Triple, Hayabusa, ZX-14, etc...

And I'm not sure I would automatically put the 900CC Cruisers on there as bad choices. I would think those should go under "debatable" instead. They're not that powerful. They are kind of heavy but for a big, strong guy that wouldn't really be an issue.

Well I figured it wouldnt be helpful to beginners to give them a horrible choice. That way they cant argue that at least it isnt "blah" color. But if anyone else thinks its a good idea then sure I then I will. What color do you think?

Anyone else for those three in yellow?

For the cruisers, The 750-900's are about 500 lbs. I dont think that's all that great for a beginner even on a cruiser. But does anyone else second this? 750-900 cruisers yellow? yay or nay?

I'd say the middleweight cruisers are debatable, but the issue with them isn't the geometry and handling, it's the weight. Especially when you consider a rookie on a 600+lb bike.

I can second that. Rode one once, it was painfully slow... kind of like a refrigirator with wheels. I don't think we really need to discuss these in some ways because I have never read a thread on here about someone that wanted to start on a vulcan 900. Just put them yellow, or make a grey color as suggested for fine, but it is heavy.

No. Cruisers are fantastic 1st bikes. Weight isn't really that much of a factor with cruisers, as the CoG is so low. And 500lbs isn't heavy, anyway.

We should also add the ubiquitous Early to Mid 90s Universal Japanese Motorcycle (UJM) to the list.

900cc, 500lbs bike with low gearing is ok for a beginner IMO..

Put it this way..if a new rider could handle a 650R with the weight it has and its more top heavy, and new rider could handle a 500lbs low COG cruiser...just a thought.

The vulcan 900's are around 600lbs. I guess that could be debatable as yellow...but green? Really?
