I wear earplugs if I'm going around town, or around the country. They help me a lot. It slows everything down, I can hear the things around me better. I hear cars better, my bike better, everything. Plus you get tired faster without earplugs (at least most people I know do). You don't have to listen to the wind noise all the time.

That's a good description. I never thought about it like that before, but you are right. It reduces the chaos of unwanted noise and lets you focus on the important things.

I wear an Arai so I don't need earplugs.

I actually keep a few pairs of cheap foam ear plugs in my jacket pocket, but always seem to forget to put them in. They definitely help me focus more on my surroundings, as well as prevent headaches (and possible hearing damage courtesy of my loud ass Yoshi pipe).

I think it should be important to note that when first switching to earplugs, a number of riders ride a little faster than they normally do because they are not used to the silence. IE they used the wind noise to help judge their speed, and with it gone, they start speeding...well, more than they normally do.

I actually did the opposite. It was almost a surreal experience to ride with them until I got used to it, so I rode with a lot more caution at first. Now it seems normal.

I rode with them almost from the very beginning, so it almost seems chaotic riding at any kind of high speed without them. I forgot to bring them once on the highway, and it was literally painful. Even though I was late, I turned around and went the 10 minutes back to get them (1+ hour highway trip). I've always been pretty self-conscious of protecting my hearing.

Wear plugs... it's been proven that wind noise causes permanent hearing damage!!!

I have helmet speakers... the kind that mount to the inside of the helmet, next to your ear. I don't like the earbuds, because they always come out when i remove the helmet, and it hurts my ears.

I wear ear plugs as well if i'm riding on the highway/freeway. If i'm going to work, i don't bother. It's only 15 minutes at about 35-40mph.

I can hear my music pretty damn well with the volume on 75% and the ear plugs in. Plus, I can't hear any wind noise. i tried to listen to stand up comedy once on a long trip, but I just couldn't follow along to the parts that were quieter with the plugs in. Oh well.

I don't think that ear buds really block as much sound as ear plugs, though. The music just drowns out the other noise. You're not really doing yourself any favors if you do that for extended periods of time.

All that being said- I HATE foam ear plugs. I can never get them back in after I have taken them out. I have very small ear canals. The GF and I ordered a sample variety pack of slim ear plugs, and some are better than others.... but i REALLY need to get a custom pair made.

This is always good for a laugh. Anyone who has worn earplugs will tell you they are 110% safe and in fact never block out enough bad sound. Thats with safety plugs or music ear plugs. Anyone who says they are dangerous hasn't used them.

The only downfall is that the group has to yell everything to each other.

I have some REALLY good two part epoxies.

I always wear earplugs on rides lasting longer than 15 min. I don't feel right without them anymore.
It also makes it alot easier to listen to the voices in my head

Always for me, i find it helps tune out all the road noise and helmet vent whistles, while still allowing to hear the important sounds. I get uncomfortable if i forget them.

In addition, my grandfather has had hearing aids as long as I can remember, for the past probably 20+ years, and it sometimes gets annoying having to shout things to him, and im sure for him to always struggle to hear everyone else, and always adjust them and whatnot. I want to be able to naturally hear as much as I can, as long as I can.

Here's a good read FreeHearingTest.com - MotorCycle Facts
